Scientists at CERN have unveiled a groundbreaking robot named “PipeINEER,” designed to autonomously inspect the intricacies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This cutting-edge technology innovation is 20cm (8 inches) long and 3.7cm (1.5 inches) wide. It’s specially designed to slip through the super collider’s tight pipes, which run an astounding 27 kilometers (17 miles) below the French-Swiss frontier near Geneva.
The LHC, operational since 2008, plays a crucial role in advancing particle physics by propelling two beams of particles to nearly the speed of light and colliding them. To maintain its world-leading experiments, it is essential to ensure that the collider’s infrastructure is in optimal condition. PipeINEER has simplified this process tremendously. It allows high-resolution imaging & inspection in narrow, cold & hard-to-reach environments.
Tethered to a supercomputer by 5G network and AI, the robot navigates without human input through the collider’s mazelike network of tunnels and pipes. It captures high-resolution images along the beamline and employs advanced algorithms to identify any deformities or potential issues that could affect the collider’s performance.
“By combining our remote handling experience with CERN’s scientific excellence, we’re helping ensure the Large Hadron Collider operates safely and efficiently for years to come,” – Nick Sykes.
Dr. Giuseppe Bregliozzi from CERN emphasized the importance of this innovation, stating that PipeINEER will “transform how we inspect and maintain the LHC.” The smart robot shines in difficult environments, greatly enhancing inspection capacity. This innovation not only eliminates hundreds of hours of manual labor but protects thousands of personnel hours from risk.
By integrating PipeINEER into daily LHC operations, the technology drastically advanced Maintenance Management. It further increases safety for the technicians and engineers who work inside the facility. This design build project was the first to use this innovative interchange design. It’s an impressive advance in scientific robotics that combines high-tech innovation with the nuts and bolts of daily maintenance.
