New Laboratory Enhances UK’s Position in Space Technology

The new super-recogniser laboratory recently opened its doors on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. Its primary aim is to manufacture and test engines for space satellites. This state-of-the-art vocational campus was constructed on a budget of £3.8 million. Its mission is to put the UK at the forefront of innovation in the space technology sector, notably through developing electric propulsion systems.

The UK Space Agency funds the laboratory in part. It provides specialist testing facilities for aerospace industry heavyweights and new ventures as well. This new initiative creates new space in direct support of innovation and collaboration between researchers and companies. Together, they’re working on creating the electric propulsion systems that energize today’s high-tech satellites.

Mark Stokes, the co-founder and CEO of Magdrive, highlighted the significance of this facility, stating that it will “create new opportunities for collaboration and discovery.”

With the strategic focus of the laboratory on electric propulsion systems, this focus couldn’t come at a better time for space technology. Space Minister Liz Lloyd emphasized the importance of these systems, asserting that they are “shaping the future of how we operate in space.” Finally, she indicated that putting money into the laboratory’s foundation is needed as well. Dr. Paul Bate, chief executive of the UK Space Agency, praised the initiative, calling it a “fantastic example of how targeted investment can deliver real impact.” He said that he was sure that this new facility would lead to major advancements in satellite technology.
