Robotic Surgery Marks New Era for Patients at QEQM Hospital

The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (QEQM) Hospital in Kent has made significant strides in surgical technology with the successful implementation of robotic surgery. Under the guidance of their new consultant colorectal / general surgeon Sudhaker Mangam, the hospital recently completed its own first robotic procedures. This new, expanded approach has given patients a more effective and less invasive treatment option.

On a recent Thursday morning, 68-year-old Mandy Lee was a pioneer in more than one way. After diagnosing her with bowel cancer, doctors had to remove most of her bowel. Mangam also used a new, advanced robotic system that had four remotely actuated arms. At the same time, Lee was given a 3D view of her internal anatomy during the entire procedure. Such promising technology gives our surgeons the ability to operate in complex procedures with a new level of precision.

Even though she was nervous at first about the idea of robotic surgery, Lee’s health came first and she trusted the process.

“It was a bit of a scary thought, I hadn’t even considered the possibility of robotic surgery, but I just wanted the cancer gone and I wasn’t put off.” – Mandy Lee

Most impressively, the NHS was able to successfully deploy the robotic system to London this spring. Now, QEQM is rolling it out themselves. The scientific community and hospital staff both reassured Lee that similar procedures had been performed successfully all over Europe, easing her fears.

Alongside Lee, Stanley Russell from Herne Bay became the second patient to benefit from this state-of-the-art technology. Jerry appreciated the education offered by his medical team.

“The team explained everything really well and said it would be less painful than going through more invasive surgery, so that made sense to me.” – Stanley Russell

Mangam stressed how important this development is for patients in east Kent. He stated,

“This marks a major advancement in surgical capability for east Kent patients, enabling greater precision, improved outcomes, and faster recovery times.” – Sudhaker Mangam

Lee had a remarkable recovery and went home only three days after her procedure. At her last check-in, she said that she was feeling better every day. This makes clear how robotic surgery helps to minimize post-operative pain and accelerates recovery.

America’s hospitals are at the forefront of clinics’ and hospitals’ advancement to each new miracle of medical technology. The impressive implementation of robotics at QEQM represents an exciting step forward for robotic surgery. Innovations are continuing to make exciting changes in store for healthcare. Now, patients can expect better treatment and better results as hospitals and practices nationwide embrace these new world-class approaches.
