Fighting giant University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has shared incredible news about the huge expansion of its robotic surgery capabilities. This decision solidifies UHNM’s position as a leader in cutting-edge medical treatments. This expansion is expected to get up to 5,000 bed days a year savings. Beyond providing cancer care, it will dramatically enhance the quality of care for over 1,000 inpatient cancer patients each year.
Whether it’s having an emergency procedure or open-heart surgery, the project is focused on helping with the most complex and high-stakes activities. Within the next decade, 90% of all keyhole surgeries performed at the facility will utilize robotic assistance, making robotic surgery the default option for many operations. The NHS has estimated that by 2035, robotic-assisted surgery will facilitate up to 500,000 procedures per year in the United Kingdom.
During the present fiscal year 2023-24, UHNM has already performed 70,000 robotic surgeries. This expansion highlights a pioneering model that is expected to be cloned across all of England. Its Royal Stoke Hospital joined premiers as the first hospital in England to install the pioneering “Magic Leap” surgical system. This innovative technology provides surgeons with highly accurate 3D images of a patient’s spine in real time during surgery, improving their accuracy and overall effectiveness.
The project will develop new technology allowing surgeons to see tissue resistance as they operate, adding another layer of precision to surgical movements. Consultant colorectal surgeon and founder of Surgery4, Philip Varghese said he was thrilled with the Surgery4 initiative, saying.
“This expansion significantly strengthens our ability to deliver robotic surgery across a wider range of complex procedures.”
The hospital’s building features striking red and yellow cladding on its lower section, symbolizing its commitment to innovation in healthcare. Coates, a representative from the foundation supporting this initiative, emphasized the project’s importance to the community:
“Supporting projects that make a lasting difference to local communities remains a core focus of the foundation.”
As one example, UHNM is on a mission to become a center of excellence for robotic surgery. Accelerating this expansion will lead to better outcomes for patients and create new opportunities for healthcare professionals. These latest innovations for technology and surgical procedure hope to improve patient recovery times and surgical success rates.
“This investment will allow more patients across the region to benefit from world-leading surgical care closer to home.”
As UHNM continues its mission to become a centre of excellence for robotic surgery, the expected outcomes from this expansion hold promise for both patients and healthcare professionals. The advancements in technology and surgical techniques aim to enhance patient recovery times and overall surgical success rates.
