Just Eat UK Trials Autonomous Delivery Robots in Urban Environments

Just Eat UK is currently running trials using 4-legged new RIVR robots to roll out autonomous delivery in cities. The trial, which involves ten independent restaurants, is taking place in two cities: Milton Keynes and Bristol. This initiative aims to assess the robots’ ability to navigate “challenging urban obstacles,” such as stairs, using their unique design featuring small wheels on each foot.

In Milton Keynes, two restaurants are participating in the trial: 12th Street Burgers & Shakes and Moores Fish & Chips. On the other end of the country, Bristol’s Jolly Fryer, Chicken Mews, Bishopston Fish Bar and five other restaurants are participating. The robots carry an orange Just Eat branded box on their backs. During the trial phase, delivery robot drivers will control them remotely from outside of restaurants.

Marko Bjelonic, chief executive of project partner RIVR, said he was looking forward to the project with optimism. He described the partnership with Just Eat UK as “an important step in scaling autonomous delivery across European cities.” Bjelonic added, “The launch in Milton Keynes reflects a shared focus on practical, automated delivery that integrates seamlessly into existing operations.”

This trial comes on the heels of a successful pilot program in Switzerland, which saw nearly 1,000 autonomous deliveries fulfilled. In tandem with the RIVR robots, Ireland is conducting trials with delivery drones. This story is part of a nationwide movement pushing automated delivery solutions in our cities.

The RIVR robots are purpose-built to navigate multiple hazards normal to cityscapes. Their quadrupedal locomotion opens up smooth surfaces as potential habitats. They can maneuver stairs and other barriers that traditional delivery vehicles can’t cross. For example, Just Eat UK is partnering with independent restaurants to support local businesses. This new partnership aims to leverage emerging technology to bring transparency and efficiency to service and delivery.

As the trial progresses, it will provide valuable insights into the practicality of integrating autonomous robots into everyday delivery operations. Just Eat UK is working hard to refocus its efforts and get this right. They’re learning, in real-time, through on-the-ground experiences with participating restaurants and consumers.
