The 6G-VERSUS research project, an initiative funded by the European Union, is set to revolutionize wildfire detection and response through cutting-edge technology. The project is under the direction of Dr. Kamran Mahroof. The ultimate goal of it is to develop a robotic dog and aerial drone team that enhances situational awareness for first responders fighting wildfires.
The project is being supported by the EU’s Horizon Innovation Action programme. Then next year, we’re bringing its pilot to life on the ground in Greece. Dr. Konstantinos Katsaros and Dr. Lazaros Karagiannidis from the ICCS will lead. They are taking the lead to shepherd this important initial phase of the project.
At a recent event in Birmingham, the 6G-VERSUS project was showcased alongside discussions on how artificial intelligence (AI) can address global challenges. Among them, wildfires, whose damage has recently taken on a more global face, serve as one of the primary pillars of this study.
Dr. Mahroof emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating, “Wildfires are a global phenomenon and have been increasing in frequency and intensity in recent years.” He further elaborated on the project’s objectives, highlighting that “the whole idea for us is to identify wildfires as soon as possible.”
We’re currently developing an innovative system AI to automatically analyze camera feeds in real-time. It will use 6G links to transfer key data in real-time. This enables teams to more quickly identify people at risk. With these advances, they can do a better job with their resources, helping keep first responders and impacted communities safe.
“In the Greek pilot of SNS-JU 6G-VERSUS, we’re developing a combined robotic dog and aerial drone system that boosts situational awareness for first responders during wildfires.” – Team
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) knew that they weren’t well acquainted with this new form of technology. As their representative wrote, they said that they would reach out to the University of Bradford team for further information.
The 6G-VERSUS project is a perfect example of how to take a proactive approach that can stop wildfires from having their overall catastrophic impacts. By integrating advanced technologies into firefighting efforts, it aims to support firefighters during prolonged operations and improve overall response strategies.
