Innovative Robot Enhances Inspection of Large Hadron Collider

Allow us to introduce you to “PipeINEER,” the latest generation autonomous robot that could change the inspection and maintenance of the LHC forever. This facility is extremely important to increasing our knowledge of the science of particle physics. The robot is 20cm long and 3.7cm wide. It’s carefully tuned to fit through the tight conduits of the LHC, a 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel 100 meters (328 feet) below the French-Swiss border.

The PipeINEER robot moves autonomously through these confined spaces, capturing clear, high-resolution images along the beamline. Its AI-powered camera is super fast at detecting any abnormalities or concerns. This helps ensure that the collider is operating at maximum efficiency. At the LHC, physicists employ over 1,200 of these dipole magnets to steer two particle beams around the LHC’s circular tunnel. These magnets get those two beams up to 99.9999991% the speed of light before they smash them together.

The autonomous PipeINEER was created by the robotics center of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Its most impressive feat is how it solves the challenges of brutal conditions and tight confines inside the collider. The robot’s design greatly increases the scale of an area that can be inspected without accessible entry.
