Zelestra Collaborates with Sungrow to Launch Major BESS Initiative in Chile

Zelestra is particularly excited about announcing our largest partnership yet with Sungrow. Collectively, they will create one of Latin America’s largest grid-connected battery energy storage systems with nearly 1 gigawatt hour (GWh) of capability. This super ambitious, mega transit-oriented development is the centerpiece of the Aurora scheme. Located in Tarapacá, Chile, it is designed to increase the region’s renewable energy production.

Aurora scheme includes a solar plant generating 220MW direct current (MWdc). It will feature Sungrow’s state-of-the-art 1+X Modular Inverter technology. This collaboration is a strong testament to Zelestra’s commitment to deliver customized multi-technology solutions to fulfil the unique needs of its customers.

Zelestra has recently executed a long term PPA with Abastible, one of the main Chilean companies. This collaboration provides Zelestra with a consistent and dependable solar energy source. The complex, once completed, will produce about 600 GWh of renewable energy annually. This will go a long way towards shaping the region’s energy and economic future. The financial structure of the project consists of 21 PPAs. It includes a senior debt package of €146.6 million in green financing, exclusively earmarked for the construction phase.

The BESS units will be the first of their kind to feature Sungrow’s new PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled technology combined with MV power conversion units. Plan on their delivery to start in 4th quarter of 2025. This new strategic partnership further demonstrates Zelestra’s commitment to collaborative innovation. It further highlights their collaborative efforts with Sungrow to accelerate the energy transition in Chile and the broader region.

“With this major agreement, we have secured some of the most advanced BESS technology available in the market to deliver one of the largest battery storage projects ever in Latin America. This is an important milestone for the Aurora project, as we advance towards the delivery of this highly customised hybrid solution that will meet the needs of our customer, Abastible.” – Zelestra CEO Leo Moreno

Sungrow’s vice-chairman, Jack Gu, expressed pride in partnering with Zelestra on this landmark initiative, stating:

“We are proud to partner with Zelestra on the landmark Aurora project, delivering our cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage solution as well as PV inverters to one of the most significant hybrid projects in Latin America. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to accelerating the energy transition in Chile and across the region, while ensuring a reliable, sustainable power supply for Chilean homes. Together, we are unlocking the full potential of solar and storage to build a greener future.” – Sungrow vice-chairman Jack Gu
