Wärtsilä, the global leader in smart technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets, has won a major contract. They’ll provide 24 of their high-efficiency 50SG engines to power a new data centre currently under construction in Texas. This order, placed in the first quarter of 2026, represents a huge step forward. It solves the data center industry’s clearly growing demand for reliable electric service with the rapid expansion of their industry.
The 507MW on-site power plant will utilize Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge 50SG engines, designed to meet both primary power and balancing requirements. The engines’ all-composite structure is notably space-saving in its design. They provide incredible efficiency, empowering facilities to squeeze every drop of energy possible. Final delivery of all equipment is scheduled for 2027. We still intend to have commercial operations at this data center in late 2028 or early 2029.
This contract is a continuation of Wärtsilä’s prior success. In November 2025, the company won an order to deliver 27 natural gas–fired engines. These engines are designed to continuously fulfill the base primary power load of a megawatt-scale data centre. This joint initiative underscores Wärtsilä’s desire to help meet the burgeoning energy needs of digital infrastructure.
Perhaps just as impressive is Wärtsilä’s true-world-advanced-global presence, with a 18,300 professionals in a more than 230 locations in over 77 countries. In 2024, the company reported record net sales of €6.4 billion ($7.9 billion). Combined with its operational excellence, this success is a reflection of the tremendous market demand for innovative energy solutions.
Risto Paldanius, a representative from Wärtsilä, echoed the call to action, emphasizing the immediate need to increase grid capacity. This urgency is due to the rapid, explosive expansion of data centres.
“The extreme surge in data centre growth requires reliable electricity, creating an urgent need for increased grid capacity across the US. Wärtsilä’s flexible engine technology enables fast response to fluctuating demand and strengthens overall system resilience.” – Risto Paldanius
Wärtsilä’s moves come as the company makes a major push into the energy sector. The company is driven to provide the most sustainable and efficient solutions that address the evolving needs of today’s infrastructure. The new 50SG engines greatly enhance its market position. It enhances energy reliability for critical infrastructure such as data centers.
