Vattenfall Advances Renewable Energy with Final Investment Decision for Nordlicht Wind Farms

Vattenfall’s decision to proceed with its final investment decision (FID) for the Nordlicht offshore wind cluster is an unexpected and confident step. This choice represents another step forward in increasing the German North Sea’s renewable energy output. The project incorporates two wind farms—Nordlicht I and Nordlicht II. Collectively, they will create an amazing capacity of 1.6 gigawatts (GW). Construction is to start later this year, with service not due to begin until 2028.

Nordlicht I alone will add an astounding 980 megawatts (MW) to the overall capacity. At the same time, Nordlicht II is only permitted to produce 630 MW. The two offshore wind farms will be located about 85 kilometers north of Borkum Island. Combined, they will feature a total of 112 turbines. Nordlicht I will have 68 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines, while Nordlicht II will install 44 of the same type.

Nordlicht project’s focus on sustainability efforts is particularly impressive. Innovation Both wind farms will employ turbine towers constructed of low-emission steel. This pioneering design and construction decision will reduce their carbon footprint by 16% vs. conventional materials. This environmentally sound approach fits neatly with Vattenfall’s public brand of seeking cleaner, healthier energy alternatives.

Construction activities are expected to begin in 2025. According to the agreement, monopile installation for Nordlicht I will begin in the third quarter of that year. In March 2025, Vattenfall very confidently took full FID (Final Investment Decision) for Nordlicht I. Later that same month, they issued a conditional FID for Nordlicht II, pending the receipt of all required permits.

Catrin Jung, Vattenfall’s government affairs representative, focused on the import of this milestone.

“Securing the irrevocable permit and reaching our full investment decision marks a defining moment for Nordlicht.” – Catrin Jung

Germany’s transition to sustainable energy, known as the Energiewende, will greatly benefit from the Nordlicht wind farms. From there, they’ll power our homes and transition America’s industries, too. Vattenfall is continuing full steam ahead with this ambitious project. By taking this action, it doubles down on its commitment to move away from dangerous fossil fuels and make our energy infrastructure more resilient.

“By producing clean electricity locally, we help create a more resilient energy system. Together with our partners, we are committed to delivering a project that will power homes and industries with fossil-free energy for decades to come.” – Catrin Jung

The Nordlicht wind farms are expected to play a crucial role in transitioning Germany towards sustainable energy sources, providing clean power to homes and industries alike. As Vattenfall moves forward with this ambitious project, it reaffirms its commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing the resilience of the energy infrastructure.
