Thor Wind Farm, located in the North Sea, recently celebrated a huge accomplishment. It has been able to deliver electricity to the Danish grid successfully. This particular milestone comes just months after the first turbine was installed. It’s another key milestone in the project’s march toward full revenue service. Once finished, the wind farm will have a total of 72 turbines and is part of Denmark’s ambitious plan to transition to green energy.
The facility has a total capacity of 1.1 gigawatt (GW). This remarkable production will supply more than a million Danish households with clean renewable electricity. Once constructed, the wind farm will inject enough clean energy to cover its local consumers’ needs. Beyond that, it will export their green electricity to interested international customers, cementing Denmark’s leadership on the renewable energy front.
With 36 steel turbine towers manufactured by Siemens Gamesa, the Thor Wind Farm showcases a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The project will be entirely implemented with the full revenues by 2027. For the very first time, all turbines will have been running commercially by then.
For the wind farm to become a reality, Energinet has been hugely important, as the TSO has been responsible for constructing the required infrastructure. This partnership is a testament to the essential role that collaboration plays in realizing Denmark’s green transition.
“Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm has reached an important milestone in the green transition. Green electricity is now flowing in from the North Sea and out through the sockets of up to one million households once Thor wind farm is fully commissioned. I am, of course, proud that Energinet has helped build the infrastructure that will distribute this green electricity to Danish consumers and to customers abroad. A big congratulations to RWE on this impressive milestone and thank you for an excellent collaboration.” – Kim Willerslev Jakobsen, Energinet Systemansvar CEO
Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, lauded the project’s advancement as well.
“Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm is now generating electricity and feeding power into the national grid for the first time. Reaching this milestone so soon after installing the first turbine demonstrates the exceptional performance of our project teams and partners, and how effectively they collaborate.” – Sven Utermöhlen, RWE offshore wind CEO
Thor Wind Farm will generate an estimated 50 to 60 local jobs. This compact smart growth initiative will revitalize the economies of this metropolitan region. A new RWE service building in Thorsminde Port will be opened in March. Increased local hiring will help address operational requirements and local economic development needs.
