For Taihan, a global top 10 cable manufacturer, this has been a huge milestone. They won a Won181.6 billion ($131 million) contract to manage the inter-array cables at the 532MW Anma offshore wind farm. We hope to create this artwork on the west coast of the Anma archipelago within Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Operations are scheduled to last through the end of 2028.
The Anma offshore wind farm, for example, occupies an area of 83.9 million square meters. Once complete, it will produce 1,400 GWh of electricity each year. Especially when that output can electrify the equivalent of 1.4 million Americans annually. Even better, it shines a light on the transformative impact the project is having on local energy resiliency and sustainability goals.
Comprehensive Management of Inter-Array Cables
Taihan will oversee the design, manufacturing, transportation, and installation of the inter-array cables essential for the operation of the Anma offshore wind farm. By assuming these roles, Taihan hopes to reduce complexity in the project and maximize coherence between all parts of the project.
On the production side, the company is rapidly expanding its manufacturing capacity. Beyond that, it’s improving installation processes to stay ahead of the rapidly increasing demand for offshore wind infrastructure, at home and abroad. Taihan is preparing to build on those capabilities even further. A second submarine cable facility, Japanese-German owned Japan-Guam Cable LLC, is set to come online in 2027.
“Leveraging our submarine cable competitiveness built since 2009, Taihan is achieving rapid results in Korea’s offshore wind segment. By consistently strengthening our turnkey capabilities, we aim to contribute to supply chain stability for Korea’s offshore wind expansion and the West Coast Energy Highway, while also enhancing export competitiveness as we actively join growing offshore wind projects in Europe and Asia.” – Taihan spokesperson
Contribution to Energy Infrastructure
Taihan’s involvement in the Anma offshore wind farm aligns with its broader goals of contributing to the stability of Korea’s offshore wind supply chain. The company considers this investment as an important step in fortifying the West Coast Energy Highway. This joint initiative will help increase the comfort and convenience of energy distribution across South Korea’s coast.
Taihan’s dedication to the development of advanced and efficient energy solutions. To build on this commitment, they will incorporate advanced high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables into their future production facility. This added capability is expected to boost the company’s competitiveness in domestic and global markets.
Future Prospects and Competitive Edge
From a local perspective, Taihan plays an important role in this multi-billion dollar project to meet Korea’s growing energy demands. Simultaneously, it seeks to increase its competitive advantage in the global offshore wind industry. Taihan is already deeply involved in projects throughout Europe and Asia. This historic effort is positioning the company as a leader in the race to make renewable energy sources more accessible.
The Anma offshore wind farm is a significant achievement for Taihan. It reflects the company’s commitment to growing its portfolio and expertise in the booming offshore wind sector. As the company prepares for a sustainable future, its efforts underscore the importance of innovation and collaboration in meeting emerging energy demands.
