Suzlon Secures Major Wind Energy Order from ArcelorMittal to Support Green Steel Production

Suzlon Group, one of the global leaders in renewable energy solutions based in India, recently announced an interesting partnership. They’re going to provide 248.85 megawatts (MW) of wind power to ArcelorMittal. This order reinforces the company’s footing in a landmark 550 MW hybrid project in Gujarat, India. Among other things, it targets increasing ArcelorMittal’s capacity to make green steel. The wind energy produced will be used for captive consumption at the company’s steel plants in various states of India.

This past year, Suzlon has partnered with steel manufacturers. Combined, they are helping making the transition to low-carbon steel production a reality. It adds a substantial new capacity of about 1.16 gigawatts (GW) of green steel to India’s total capacity. With this latest announcement, Suzlon reaffirms its mission of enhancing sustainability and renewable energy usage within the steel industry.

The order includes the provision of 79 S144 wind turbine generators, each rated at 3.15 MW. Additionally, Suzlon has a healthy lineup of 2.x MW and 3.x MW series wind turbines. These turbines have been instrumental in the company’s pursuit of growth and expansion. The firm is responsible for the installation of more than 21 GW of wind power in 17 countries around the world. This accomplishment underscores its deep background and knowledge in the renewable energy arena.

Girish Tanti, joint managing director and vice-chairman of Suzlon, said his company was proud to have the partnership with ArcelorMittal.

“We are proud to partner with ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s most respected steel producers. Steel is the backbone of India’s infrastructure, yet it remains one of the most energy-intensive industries.”

Suzlon has established innovation centers in Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and India. This commitment is a strong show of their leadership on continued innovation and progress with leading in renewable technologies. Shifting gears, the company is concentrating its efforts on the EPC (engineering, procurement & construction) business. It has targeted increasing its proportion in this segment to 50% of the total order book.

In addition to this collaboration, Suzlon recently secured a 1.17 GW wind energy order from NTPC Green Energy in September 2024. The firm has taken a leading role in decarbonization efforts within the steel sector. It accomplishes this through strategic partnerships and robust industry coalitions like the Indian Steel Green Council.

“As the sector accelerates its journey toward decarbonisation, renewable energy has become a competitive and viable contributor. At Suzlon, we are committed to making this transition a reality through strong partnerships and industry coalitions like the Indian Steel Green Council.” – Girish Tanti, Suzlon vice-chairman
