In the face of a recent lease suspension order Ørsted is developing a highly strategic project that would stand to challenge this order. This order was first issued by the U.S. Dept. Sunrise Wind has a whopping 924 megawatts (MW) of capacity. It is expected to be an important contributor in assisting New York State meet its ambitious renewable energy goals.
As of this writing, the project is about 45% finished now, having already installed 44 monopile foundations of a planned 84. The successful completion of the offshore converter station represents another key milestone in the development of what will be the nation’s largest offshore wind farm. Once in operation, Sunrise Wind will deliver enough clean energy to power around 600,000 New York homes. All this will occur on the basis of a 25-year contract.
