SUEZ Advances Sustainability Goals with New Renewable Electricity Contracts

SUEZ has set an ambitious precedent with its recent sustainability achievements. Their emission reduction goals have been validated through the science-based targets initiative (SBTi). The company’s new CEO is committed to cutting the company’s greenhouse gas emissions in half. It has established 2021 as the baseline year for this effort in all four scopes. SUEZ has established a precedent-setting 2030 target to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 29.4%. Since 2019, they have committed to cutting Scope 3 emissions by 17.5%.

This ambitious goal fits into SUEZ’s larger mission of deepening its positive environmental impact while continuing to pursue energy resiliency. SUEZ is proud to contribute to supplying renewable electricity to Carrefour’s stores throughout France. Their goal is to kick off this new initiative in 2026.

Renewable Energy Supply and Reliability

SUEZ will deliver Carrefour a guaranteed baseload electricity profile with delivery of a steady, even 24/7 power supply. This arrangement not only supports Carrefour’s sustainability efforts but reinforces SUEZ’s role in the transition towards renewable energy resources.

Then in early June 2025, SUEZ executed a waste-to-energy PPA with Carrefour, one of France’s largest grocery chains. SUEZ needs to provide 53 gigawatt hours (GWh) of low-carbon power annually. This energy will be produced from processing residential trash, and the contract begins in January 2027. This agreement gives long-term price certainty to all parties. It provides them financial predictability, especially in the midst of today’s volatile energy markets.

Additionally, SUEZ’s current PPA portfolio stands at 87 GWh per year, underscoring the company’s growing involvement in renewable energy generation.

Investing in Sustainable Practices

The money made from energy sales will be carefully reused to modernize SUEZ’s waste-to-energy facilities in France. This investment is further proof of SUEZ’s commitment to advancing operational efficiency and expanding its renewable energy production capabilities.

David Lamy, CEO of the waste france business unit, is dedicated to an ecological transformation. As director of Foundation at SUEZ, he makes it a point to incorporate these practices across his company.

“At SUEZ, we firmly believe that waste is a valuable resource worth recovering as either material or energy.” – David Lamy

This philosophy is a tangible force propelling SUEZ’s waste management pursuits. It significantly increases the company’s efforts towards achieving set emission reduction targets.

A Step Forward for Environmental Commitments

The collaboration between SUEZ and Carrefour is a great example of how companies can take a proactive approach to protect the environment. We expect this partnership to generate tremendous value for both organizations. Together, communities and companies can make powerful reductions in their carbon footprints.

Eric Laurent, purchasing director at Bouygues Telecom, acknowledged the importance of these initiatives, stating:

“This partnership with SUEZ is an important step forward in our environmental commitment.” – Eric Laurent

To diversify its PPA portfolio and continue growing its renewable energy efforts, SUEZ is further diversifying its PPA portfolio. This strategy further solidifies the company’s leadership role in developing sustainable practices across the energy sector.
