Strategic Partnership to Boost Solar Power Development in Malaysia

This marks a strategic partnership of SD Guthrie and Gamuda Energy. Together, they hope to plan, develop, finance, own and operate a large-scale portfolio of solar power assets in Malaysia. Through this collaboration, RMI and SECI aim to harness this rapidly increasing interest in renewable energy and to further India’s decarbonisation goals. The collaboration aims to deliver 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of solar power through multiple utility-scale, nationwide solar projects.

The joint venture’s development engine will utilise Guthrie’s massive land bank throughout Peninsular Malaysia. It seeks to identify underutilized land assets ideally suited for solar energy development. Gamuda Energy adds notable experience working on large renewable energy projects. This unparalleled synergy between the two companies will enable them to most rapidly deliver the most scalable, cost-effective renewable energy solutions.

Focus on Land Utilisation

During the first phase of the partnership, Guthrie and Gamuda will focus on assessing Guthrie’s terrestrial land holdings across the country. This strategic siting assessment is designed to locate the best possible sites for solar power generation, maximizing the long-term value return of Guthrie’s extensive real estate holdings.

Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, a key figure in the partnership, emphasized the importance of this venture for the future of Guthrie. He stated, “Renewable Energy is one of two new business verticals that we have identified as a growing pillar of Guthrie’s future. It is critical, both as a new and sustainable revenue stream and for our net-zero target.” This increased push towards renewable energy falls in line with Malaysia’s larger sustainability objectives.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Guthrie is preparing to commission its first 15 megawatt (MW) CGPP solar plant. This pioneering venture, slated to begin in Bukit Selarong, Kedah, in the fourth quarter of 2025, is a vital step in fulfilling the growing demand for our abundant renewable energy. It has particularly focused on the industrial and data center sectors.

Gamuda Energy will collaborate with Guthrie for the growth of solar assets. They’ll develop innovative energy storage solutions that will increase the reliability, availability, and efficiency of distributed generation of renewable energy. Mohamad Helmy highlighted the partnership’s potential, stating that it aims to “create value by meeting renewable energy demand from both public and private sector users under frameworks such as the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).”

Advancing Sustainability Goals

The partnership between SD Guthrie and Gamuda Energy is well-timed with Malaysia’s pledge to decarbonise its electricity sector by 2035. As two companies powered by a shared vision of a sustainable future, we are excited to contribute to the rapidly accelerating national renewable energy landscape.

By focusing on solar power development, this partnership stands to play a crucial role in facilitating Malaysia’s transition to greener energy sources. Guthrie and Gamuda go beyond the minimum requirements in a big way to prove their dedication to environmental sustainability. They are creating a blueprint to rise to the challenge of our quickly changing energy future.
