For Statkraft, the Norwegian state-owned power company, it’s a big move. Similarly, Acciona announced that they will be selling their Colombian renewables portfolio, Enerfín Colombia, to Ecopetrol, Colombia’s national oil company. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025. This strategic move aligns with Statkraft’s ongoing efforts to consolidate its operations in core markets while promoting growth in selected regions, including the Nordics, Europe, and South America.
This agreement covers those eight projects that are in active development. Among them is the jaw-droppingly good 130MW Portón del Sol solar plant, which is even smarter for being Colombia’s first utility-scale solar facility. In May 2024, Statkraft completed the acquisition of Enerfín Colombia. This acquisition massively increased Statkraft’s footprint in Colombia and solidified its lead in the renewable energy transition across South America. The acquisition massively enlarged Statkraft’s asset base. It now claims to have 1.5GW of wind and solar generation facilities currently in operation or under construction.
The deal involves the transfer of personnel from Enerfín Colombia to Ecopetrol. This strategic move ensures ownership continuity as well as depth of expertise within the collective’s new ownership structure. In Spain and Brazil, Statkraft is one of the ten largest producers of wind energy. This remarkable place represents an effort to not only hire or develop that renewable energy expertise after it acquired Enerfín.
On the purchase, Barbara Flesche, Ecopetrol’s executive vice-president for Europe, said that Ecopetrol was particularly excited about the acquisition.
“I am pleased to announce that we have successfully signed the second of the planned divestments of our Enerfín portfolio in countries outside Statkraft’s core markets. The deal confirms that Enerfín has built a skilled team and an attractive portfolio in Colombia. We are looking forward to watching the business grow under new ownership.” – Barbara Flesche
This divestment aligns with Statkraft’s strategy to concentrate on key markets, while enabling Ecopetrol to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio. The Colombian energy market is currently experiencing a substantial growth spurt. This transition leaves Ecopetrol well positioned to leverage emerging opportunities in renewable energy.
