Skyborn Renewables has now completed contract awards for all major elements of the Gennaker offshore wind farm with success. The success of this project will be pivotal to advancing renewable energy in the German Baltic Sea. Gennaker is located about 15 kilometers north of the Tanzoval Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. It is situated within the prime zone of the newly founded priority area for offshore wind energy in the coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
This ambitious project has a planned capacity of up to 976.5 megawatts (MW) the largest ever developed in the world. This now enables Gennaker to potentially grow to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. Skyborn has made significant progress on the project since it received the first building permit in May 2019. It’s been an exciting few years of progress! In addition, Skyborn has site exclusivity for the further development of Gennaker.
Contracts and Local Impact
Skyborn’s advances on the project are substantial. For that work, they’ve contracted EEW Special Pipe Construction (EEW SPC) to provide 63 monopile foundations for the wind farm. Each monopile is going to be an impressive 54.1 meters long with a top diameter of 7.5 meters. At a maximum weight of 877 tonnes, these structures are incredibly robust. The monopiles are to be manufactured in Rostock, about 40 kilometers from the future Gennaker location.
To that end, this local production will be the engine that fuels the project’s success. It will boost the local supply chain and job creation benefits at EEW SPC too, where 1,000 workers are now on EEW SPC’s payroll. The contracts signify a commitment to fostering local economic growth while advancing renewable energy efforts.
“We are extremely proud of the agreements we have signed with each of Gennaker’s suppliers. We, and the project, can now rely on a pool of highly experienced contractors to deliver Gennaker on budget and on schedule.” – Skyborn CEO Patrick Lammers
Commitment to Community and Sustainability
Skyborn’s contracts show the commitment that they intend to make sure that Gennaker serves the local community. The value of the project Once completed, the project will provide permanent benefits through investments, job creation, and positive environmental impacts.
“Our commitment to Gennaker being rooted in the local community delivers long-lasting value and benefits for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern,” said Lammers. “Offshore wind delivers positive impact on the ground, be that via investments, jobs or decarbonisation!”
As the Gennaker project moves forward, it is slated to be commissioned in 2028. The successful collaboration with experienced contractors underlines Skyborn’s confidence in meeting timelines and budgetary constraints while contributing to Germany’s renewable energy goals.
Future Prospects
Skyborn Renewables has executed the contracts. Today, they are one step closer to making their dreams come true as they prepare to build the construction of the Gennaker offshore wind farm. This venture is being hailed as a significant step to grow renewable energy across the community. In addition to reducing emissions, it stimulates local economies by creating jobs and attracting investment.
