Siemens Gamesa has now been officially selected to supply the turbines for the Formosa 4 offshore wind project. This revolutionary project is found on the shores of Miaoli County. This momentous change came on the heels of the project winning a successful capacity award. This accomplishment occurred through the very first auction round of Phase 3 zonal development in late 2022. Formosa 4 would produce enough clean energy to power about 500,000 homes annually. This impressive capacity speaks to Taiwan’s deep commitment to renewable energy.
Figure 2 The project route along Taiwan’s west coast. It’s being created by a company with a well-established reputation for its business intelligence and editorial quality. With Formosa 4 having just recently received its final establishment permit in late 2024, this approval is a critical step forward in its development trajectory. Their partnership with Siemens Gamesa to increase local industrial nacelle production through their facility in Taichung, Taiwan is a wonderful example of this.
Project Scope and Impact
Formosa 4 is slated to be a key player in Taiwan’s transition to renewable energy. When finished, this project will provide enough energy to serve 65,000 homes annually. It will go a long way toward reducing the Northeast region’s carbon emissions. The size and capacity of the project emphasizes the development in Taiwan’s offshore wind market, which currently has more than 3GW of installed capacity.
The developer of Formosa 4 — Ørsted — has recently become Taiwan’s biggest offshore wind developer. They brought to life Formosa 1, Taiwan’s first ever offshore wind farm, successfully launching it in 2019, and quickly after came Formosa 2, which became the first Phase 2 project to reach commercial operations. This trajectory highlights their essential part in moving Taiwan’s offshore wind mission forward.
Collaboration and Logistics
Cadeler, a logistics company that focuses on marine transport, picked up a significant contract. They are leading the transportation and installation of the Formosa 4 turbines, part of that project. Their deep engagement is a testament to the complexity of the project’s logistics and need for precise and effective execution to stay on schedule.
Siemens Gamesa and SRE are looking to further intensify their partnership. Their winning, ongoing partnership to advance litigation against Formosa’s projects sets the stage for further momentum against Formosa 4. Lucas Lin, SRE Chair, expressed his enthusiasm for this ongoing collaboration, stating:
“Over the past six years, we have delivered Formosa 1, Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm, and Formosa 2, the first among Phase 2 projects to reach commercial operation. Now we’re building on that success with Formosa 4. Given the strong partnership forged with Siemens Gamesa during Formosa 1 and 2, we’re pleased to have them on board again for Formosa 4, deepening the collaboration and advancing sustainability together.” – Lucas Lin, SRE Chair
Commitment to Renewable Energy
Siemens Gamesa’s participation indicates a serious commitment to the state’s local production and supply chain development efforts. The company’s global head of sales, Mogens Jakobsen, remarked on their dedication to Taiwan’s renewable energy landscape:
“With more than 3GW of installed capacity, Taiwan is an important offshore market for Siemens Gamesa. The Formosa 4 project reaffirms our commitment and will strengthen our local industrial nacelle production in Taichung further. We are excited to work with SRE to provide Taiwan with reliable green energy, and we thank SRE for their continued trust and cooperation following the Formosa 1 and Formosa 2 projects.” – Mogens Jakobsen, Siemens Gamesa Global Head of Sales
