Seaway7, one of the newest members of the Subsea7 Group, recently had a big news drop to their pipeline. They will be laying inter-array cables for the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm project. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the coast of Miaoli County, Taiwan, the Formosa 4 project aims to harness wind energy with an impressive capacity of 495 megawatts (MW). This project is another important milestone in Taiwan’s determination to build its renewable energy base.
Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) is leading the Formosa 4 project with an installation of 35 wind turbine generators. Formosa 4 will feature large wind turbines. It will include an offshore substation and an onshore substation, with each having a capacity of 500 MW. The onshore substation will establish an important connection to the Taiwan Power Company’s Fangli substation, allowing for efficient energy distribution.
Project Timeline and Scope
Formosa 4’s offshore construction will begin in 2028. The least we can do is to have SRE and Seaway7 complete contract signature by 2026. As such, Seaway7 will be responsible for the transport and installation of 35 inter-array cables, plus the installation of cable protection systems. The export cables are outside of their jurisdiction for this project.
Seaway7 has been selected as the preferred contractor for cable installation on SRE’s Formosa 6 project, further solidifying its presence in the Taiwanese offshore wind market. To deliver on its Formosa 4 project, the company will rely on the Maersk Connector cable-lay vessel. This step will greatly improve operational efficiency.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
Stuart Fitzgerald, CEO of Seaway7, added that they were excited to be working with SRE on this landmark project. He stated,
“We are looking forward to supporting SRE on the Formosa 4 project and being able to continue contributing to the Taiwanese offshore wind targets with our seventh contract award since entering the Taiwanese market in 2019.”
This statement reflects Seaway7’s broader commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives in Taiwan, underscoring its role as a key player in the region’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.
Significance of Formosa 4
SRE has recently introduced the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm as its third project. Jointly funded by both governments, this project will strengthen Taiwan’s renewable energy advancement. The strategic effort to move us all beyond our dangerous dependence on fossil fuels is picking up steam. Development projects like Formosa 4 undoubtedly contribute to essential national energy goals and promote environmental sustainability.
In addition to reducing pollution from fossil fuel operations, the Formosa 4 project aims to accelerate clean energy generation. It will be a big step in Taiwan’s green energy scene. The collaboration between SRE and Seaway7 highlights a growing trend of partnerships aimed at enhancing offshore wind capacity in the region, ultimately supporting Taiwan’s ambitions for a more sustainable future.
