RWE Launches First Wind Farm in Rhineland-Palatinate

RWE, one of Germany’s largest renewable energy developers, has completed commissioning the Kail wind farm. This project marks their first collaborative journey to the Rhineland-Palatinate region. The new facility is located along a plateau above the Moselle River valley, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Koblenz. The facility features three turbines providing a total capacity of 12.9 megawatts (MW). This generation is enough to power approximately 7,500 homes annually with clean energy.

With completion of the Kail wind farm, this will be RWE’s first project built in the U.S. To date, this achievement significantly expands the company’s renewable energy portfolio. We hope to have this project realized by October 9, 2025. Its mission is to produce more clean energy, and do more good in the community through contributions from local residents.

Community Contributions and Local Impact

RWE has dedicated to advancing adjacent communities’ interests as part of its Kail wind farm project. For each kilowatt hour of energy generated, the company will pay out an indexed 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour to neighboring residents. The income from this initiative is expected to generate up to €60,000 per year for neighboring communities.

Katja Wünschel, RWE’s chief of offshore wind business development, took the opportunity to thank all parties involved in the project.

“Thank you very much to the companies involved, the local authorities, the district of Cochem-Zell and the farmers who made their land available, as well as the dedicated RWE team.” – Katja Wünschel

This team effort, which showcases RWE’s deep commitment to strengthening its U.S. renewable energy portfolio, simultaneously seeks to enhance the socio-economic fabric of the area.

Swift Completion Through Cooperation

The successful and timely completion of the Kail wind farm can be attributed to the strong cooperation among various stakeholders.

“Their excellent cooperation enabled us to complete our first wind farm in the Rhineland-Palatinate region quickly.” – Katja Wünschel

This project opens the door for other advancements in the field. It is a shining example of how more efficient collaboration can dramatically accelerate progress on renewable energy projects.

Future Expansion Plans

RWE is already constructing several wind farms in Germany, with an expected capacity of at least 150 MW. One of the main anchor projects in this effort is the Kail wind farm. This extension will further add to the current 737 MW of operational wind farms that RWE operates and maintains. The ongoing efforts reflect the company’s dedication to advancing its renewable energy footprint and contributing to Germany’s energy transition.
