Rolls-Royce has launched a new modular gas engine power plant solution to support Germany’s energy transition. This new undertaking complements the country’s newly adopted Power Plant Strategy. It’s opening the door to a more reliable and sustainable energy future. Each of the modular gas engine plants can produce power from 5 megawatts (MW) up to several hundred MW. They’re more than just controversial — they’re designed with intricate, expert precision.
These modular, scalable plants are built around preconfigured, factory tested 10MW, 20MW and 30MW rated modules. Such a modular design allows for a quick connection to the grid within just 12 to 18 months following an order placement. Germany is quickly mobilizing these steps to solidify and protect its energy infrastructure. This undertaking is especially important to improve reliability, as the country grows more dependent on intermittent renewable energy sources.
Supporting Energy Transition
The modular gas engine plants from Rolls-Royce are positioned as vital components in supporting Germany’s transition to a low-carbon energy mix. Each unit is “hydrogen-ready,” making future conversion to hydrogen fuel seamless as the nation turns away from fossil fuels that harm our communities. Flexibility is key. This flexibility not only increases the lifetime capacity of the plants, but it complements Germany’s ambitious climate targets.
With sufficient storage, these systems can deliver backup power. This capability is especially important for integrating the variable generation from wind and solar power. We know renewable generation can swing widely. The modular plants help to fill that gap in times of low production which can extend anywhere from a few hours to weeks. This flexible capability provides a consistent power backstop, helping to strengthen the resiliency of Germany’s energy grid during critical peak hours.
Collaboration and Economic Impact
Tobias Ostermaier, president of Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems underlined the importance of a proven partner network. These networks facilitate quicker delivery of these modular plants. These partnerships not only expedite the implementation process but contribute to regional economic growth by creating jobs and fostering local industries.
The opening of Rolls-Royce’s modular gas engine manufacturing facilities is the latest development in Germany’s Power Plant Strategy. By combining speed, flexibility, and reliability, these systems support the country’s energy supply while promoting economic benefits through local partnerships.
