Revolution Wind Project Powers Up New England’s Energy Future

With Revolution Wind officially starting to deliver electricity to New England, the U.S. With this accomplishment, the region’s energy landscape has taken an important step toward equity for all. With it, Ørsted built the largest offshore wind initiative in the world at 704-megawatt of capacity. Once complete, it will deliver energy to more than 350,000 homes and businesses in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Revolution Wind is coming online just as electricity demand in New England is hitting record highs. This increase comes as a result of strong, positive economic development and the boom of manufacturing and data center industries.

This project has directly produced more than 2,000 jobs for workers in a wide range of industries. Workers are booming across industries from construction, shipping, operations, and manufacturing. In addition, the project has mostly utilized local union laborers, engaging on average over 1,000 contemporaneously. In all, they’ve provided over 2 million hours of manpower. This $23 million investment does more than support new job creation, it helps stabilize their local economy.

Revolution Wind has already secured 20-year fixed-price Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with RI and CT utilities. This strategy ensures a consistent, affordable energy supply and helps protect consumers from price volatility. Amanda Dasch, Ørsted’s chief development officer, called Revolution Wind a game-changer. This exciting project is doing something new—bringing affordable, reliable American-made energy to the grid. This community solar project is designed to provide full-spectrum clean energy generation throughout the year. Specifically, it expects increased production during the cold winter months when the demand is typically at its peak.

At 1400 MW of capacity, Revolution Wind doubles the state’s clean energy supply. It strengthens smart grid reliability for the entire US Western region. As New England’s electricity demand continues to rise, the project’s timely implementation is crucial for meeting these increasing needs. Once operational, Revolution Wind will produce enough clean energy to deliver power to about 350,000 households. This new output will significantly improve energy resilience in the area.

Ørsted’s $1.2 billion investment in Revolution Wind has already committed almost $700 million on domestic shipbuilding and vessel contracts. That commitment has already resulted in 14 new vessels built in America. In turn, the local maritimes industry is continuing to gain strength, producing hundreds of new and highly sought after job opportunities.

The state and its neighbors are rapidly adopting renewable energy as a way to both combat climate change and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. With Revolution Wind, Ørsted continues its leadership in transparent sustainable energy solutions. Its successful launch represents a larger trend that is gaining momentum. Increasing numbers of investors are looking for clean energy infrastructure that advances climate goals, produces cleaner air, and drives economic development.
