ReNew Unveils $2.5 Billion Renewable Energy Complex in Andhra Pradesh

Just a few months ago, ReNew cheered an enormous $2.5 billion investment! The joint venture will use the funding to build a 2.8GW hybrid renewable energy complex in Andhra Pradesh, India. When completed, this ambitious project will be one of India’s largest renewable energy projects in a single location. It’s an important step that indicates we are moving the nation forward on a rapid transition toward a low-carbon energy future. The development is designed to improve grid reliability, while showcasing cutting-edge technologies to make efficient and reliable energy production happen.

The hybrid renewable energy complex will feature 837MW of wind and solar capacity respectively. With efficiency in mind, it will include a 415MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This connectivity provides on-demand, consistent, and clear-cut clean energy. It creates grid stability and progress toward the country’s sustainable energy goals.

Project Details and Technological Innovations

The project will deploy exclusively domestically manufactured solar panels, fitting into India’s broader effort to set its solar sector on the path toward self-reliance and sustainability. With cutting-edge PV tracking technology, it will greatly improve solar energy capture. It boasts waterless robotic cleaning technology to produce the most while saving precious resources.

The system design of the hybrid system is tailored to meet 300MW of peak power, while giving a reliable baseload supply. This creative paradigm shifts ReNew into the forefront of renewable energy solutions in India. It equally prioritizes achieving scale and the more critical and important elements of reliability and flexibility in energy production.

Financial Backing and Strategic Importance

ReNew’s project is a $477 million total financial package. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is currently enabling $146 million of additional financing from other lenders to make this possible. This project showcases ADB’s first round-the-clock peak renewable energy initiative. It serves a vital role in driving the adoption of sustainable energy practices.

Bhargav Dasgupta, an ADB country representative, underscored the importance of the project when he said,

“This is the first round-the-clock peak renewable energy project to be financed by ADB. The integration of BESS with wind-solar hybrid systems ensures firm and reliable clean power, improves grid stability, and supports India’s transition to a sustainable energy future.”

A Vision for a Sustainable Energy Future

ReNew’s plan mirrors India’s growing ambition to deploy renewable energy at scale under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. As ReNew CEO Sumant Sinha described the potentially transformative nature of this phase in India’s clean energy transition, remarks by

“India is entering a new phase of the clean energy transition under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. This phase is defined not only by scale, but by reliability and flexibility. This project demonstrates that renewable energy can now be delivered competitively at grid scale as per peak power demand requirements.”
