Osaka Gas Expands Power Generation Capacity with New Himeji Plant

A new 1,000 megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant by Osaka Gas in Himeji, Japan has officially begun commercial operations. This major move will increase the company’s domestic thermal power generation capacity. We want to grow it from an estimated 2 gigawatts (GW) to something closer to 3.2 GW. Units 1 & 2 at the new Himeji power station, each with a capacity of 622.6 megawatts (MW). This expansion represents a critical step in Osaka Gas’s strategy to enhance its energy output while meeting Japan’s growing energy demands.

As the new Himeji plant goes into commercial operation, it will be helping Japan implement its Strategic Energy Plan. This plan emphasizes natural gas as an important transition fuel to get our nation to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Japan is adopting greater use of natural gas into its energy portfolio. This action will further diversify its energy portfolio while eliminating reliance on some of the most carbon-intensive fuels. The Himeji facility’s operationalization will be instrumental in this transition providing a cleaner source of energy.

Advancing Renewable Energy Initiatives

Hover Energy’s new Himeji plant will produce renewable hydrogen using excess offshore wind energy. This decision is a real breakthrough for the growth of smart microgrids and distributed renewables. Their creative model prioritizes the inclusion of renewable energy sources into current power grids, ensuring that communities receive a more efficient and sustainable power source. So Osaka Gas recently joined forces with companies including Hover Energy. This unprecedented collaboration highlights a larger momentum toward integrating advanced technologies like AI into the energy industry.

This renewed focus on renewables should come as welcome news to those who have been following Japan’s efforts to increase energy security and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Intelligent microgrid technology makes it easier for energy producers to generate power that they know will be used, improving reliability and reducing waste. These improvements are more important than ever as the country deals with the realities of moving into a rapidly transitioning and more sustainable energy future.

Strategic Partnerships and Investments

ArcLight Capital Partners is the most recent party to announce a definitive purchase agreement. They are poised to purchase stakes in Kleen Energy Systems from Osaka Gas USA and Kyuden International Americas LLC. Kleen Energy Systems is a 620 MW natural gas-fired, base-load power generation asset in New England, US. We thank ArcLight for their support of reliable energy infrastructure investment, as we continue to enable expanded and cleaner energy production.

The partnership between these entities signifies a growing recognition of natural gas as an essential component of the energy landscape. And stakeholders are betting on these type of risky assets such as Kleen Energy Systems to improve their portfolios. Simultaneously, they’re at the forefront of a global race toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy economy.
