Northland Power Secures Five-Year Power Purchase Agreement with Shell for Nordsee One Wind Farm

Northland Power, a Canadian energy company headquartered in Toronto, is nearing the completion of a five-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Shell. This transaction includes Shell’s Nordsee One offshore wind farm, situated in the North Sea. This agreement is a testament to the fierce resolve we share to lead on renewable energy. It hopes to make Shell’s path to meeting its energy transition objectives easier.

Nordsee One covers an area of approximately 41.3 km², located in the German exclusive economic zone. With 54 turbines, it produces enough clean, renewable electricity to power more than 400,000 average households per year. Since commissioning in December 2017, Nordsee One has been a large part of providing renewable energy to Europe.

Northland Power’s Global Operations

Northland Power’s home base is in Canada, but the company has presence in seven countries. They have economic interests in a total gross operating generation capacity of 3.5 gigawatts (GW). The company’s existing and under-construction capacity stands at 2.2 GW. It has a healthy development pipeline with 25% of its installed capacity development pipeline—about 9 GW—promising capacity at best.

Christine Healy, a spokesperson for Northland Power, emphasized the importance of the agreement with Shell:

“We are proud to supply Shell with power that advances their energy transition goals. Our Nordsee One offshore wind facility is producing renewable electricity for Europe, and we are leveraging that strength to continue delivering value from our portfolio.”

This partnership is an example of Northland Power doubling down on its renewable energy operations. It puts some muscle behind growing support for energy sector disruptors.

Future Projects and Developments

In addition to the operations at Nordsee One, Northland Power is currently working on another major project: the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. Construction for this state facility began in February of this year. The Baltic Power project is a joint operator joint venture between the Orlen Group and Northland Power. It’s trying to increase renewable energy generation in the region by 100-fold.

Installed monopile foundations for Baltic Power in the Baltic Sea. Baltic Power has achieved a critical milestone. We recognize that this achievement is a testament to Northland Power’s marked drive to further renewables.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

With its current projects and global partnerships, Northland Power continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The company is deeply rooted in engaging their current assets, including successful projects such as Nordsee One, to utilize the vast potential renewable electricity provides. This strategy addresses rising energy needs throughout Europe.

As Northland Power moves forward, it remains focused on expanding its portfolio and enhancing its contributions to global renewable energy efforts. Together with our partners at Shell, this collaborative approach deepens our commitment to advancing sustainability. Beyond that, it opens the door for other climate-focused collaborations to establish a brighter clean energy future.
