Nordex Expands Manufacturing in Iowa with Major Wind Turbine Contracts

Nordex has confirmed a $200 million expansion of its nacelle-manufacturing operations in Iowa. This decision follows Alliant Energy’s recent award of a series of contracts to the company. Together, the contracts are the largest single investment in the Commonwealth’s thriving manufacturing base. They will help allow for the production of wind turbine components at Nordex’s West Branch facility. Beyond creating hundreds of new local jobs with this endeavor, it will further stimulate economic development within the community.

It is this West Branch facility that has recently gotten back into the game of manufacturing turbine hubs, drivetrains and nacelles. This represents a critical time for Nordex as the company prepares to execute on their new contracts. The company expects series production of the new turbines to begin in 2018 with construction slated for Alliant Energy. It’s an important effort that underscores the growing demand for renewable energy solutions across the United States.

Competitive Process and Future Projects

Nordex was awarded the contracts following a highly competitive request for proposals process. This accomplishment is a reflection of KF’s proven ability to deliver quality solutions and services. Nordex has worked with Alliant Energy to improve efficiencies. Further, the company won new orders from wpd for 21 turbines over six projects in Germany. Once operational, these projects will provide a firm strength to the grid by adding up to 1,060 megawatts of wind capacity. This major improvement will make Nordex’s lead in the renewable energy space even more unassailable.

The windows for the turbines installation are in 2028 and 2029. This ambitious timetable is a great fit with each company’s strategic aim to increase their renewable energy mix. This timeline illustrates a comprehensive, strategic, and intentional plan to increase wind energy capacity dramatically. It strives to provide the innovative, sustainable solutions our world needs to meet growing energy needs.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The addition by Nordex will create up to 1,000 new jobs in Iowa, greatly boosting the local economy and helping to make the state more competitive. Nordex, of course, is working on ramping up production at the West Branch facility. This action will ensure that the growing demand for wind energy can be met and will stimulate the local economy and job market.

Lisa Barton, president and CEO of Alliant Energy, spoke highly about this collaborative relationship.

“Choosing Nordex underscores our confidence in their skills and our commitment to working with partners who support our ability to serve our customers and communities, and we are pleased to have selected a local provider for this work.” – Lisa Barton, Alliant Energy president and CEO.

The partnership between Nordex and Alliant Energy is a great example of what strategic relationships can accomplish. United, they are creating incredible economic opportunities and leading the charge on clean energy innovation.

A Historical Milestone

José Luis Blanco, CEO of Nordex Group called the contract award “particularly significant.” He emphasized that it will have historic consequences for the company’s future in the U.S.

“We are honoured Alliant Energy has selected Nordex for this milestone, which stands as the largest volume awarded in our company’s 25-year history in the US.” – José Luis Blanco, Nordex Group CEO.

This partnership represents the largest milestone yet for Nordex. It underscores the increasing importance of domestic production in supporting clean energy investments.
