NLCIL and NALCO Forge Strategic Agreement for Energy Development

India’s state miners, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and the National Aluminium Company (NALCO), have formed a joint venture deal. They will join forces to work on energy projects focusing on thermal and renewable sources. This unique collaboration aims to accelerate the delivery of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) in clean energy projects. It stands as a momentous leap forward in India’s quest for sustainable energy solutions.

The deal covers the development of thermal captive power plants and renewable energy projects. During the first stage, we’ll set a precedent by adding 500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity. We then intend to gradually increase that capability to a staggering 2 gigawatts (GW). The renewable energy projects will be implemented in several phases so that careful planning and implementation can take place.

In December 2025, NLC India Renewables, a wholly owned subsidiary of NLCIL, signed a JV agreement along with PTC India. With NLCIL and PTC India’s official partnership inaugurated in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, this collaboration is a reflection of their shared dedication to facilitating development of innovative renewable energy projects in partnership. This landmark joint venture, we hope, will provide a shared vision of expanding clean energy solutions into communities while mutually leveraging each firm’s strengths.

Both NLCIL and NALCO are public, state-run enterprises, but together they have contributed majorly towards India’s energy sector. Their work together is a testament to the government’s commitment to increase energy security and lower carbon emissions by developing a diversified energy portfolio. Together, by leveraging their respective resources and expertise, they hope to meet our country’s increasing energy needs and fulfill our commitment to environmental sustainability.

The simultaneous development of a thermal captive power plant while planning the renewable projects indicates a holistic approach to energy development. This dual focus will not only help meet immediate energy needs but pave the way for a greener future. The collaborative leadership and successful implementation of these creative initiatives would be a powerful example for similar collaborations to take root elsewhere around the country.
