NHOA Energy has a new, exciting battery energy storage system (BESS) project under development. They’ve joined forces with EnergyAustralia and Enerven to bring it to life! This ambitious demonstration project is located just outside of Canowie in Hallett, South Australia. With a capacity of 245 megawatt-hours (MWh), it aims to improve grid stability as part of Australia’s fractured National Electricity Market (NEM). The expected commissioning of the Hallett BESS is set to begin in January 2027.
The Hallett BESS is a grid-forming solution. It will improve controlling frequency and delivering needed support to the grid. This storage system will facilitate energy arbitrage. It will bring about greater efficiency in energy resource use and improve the overall resilience of South Australia’s power system. It will enable greater incorporation of renewable energy sources into the grid.
NHOA Energy’s commitment to empowering durable regional energy infrastructure is clear. It had previously commissioned the Blyth Battery in April 2025, with a capacity of 238.5MW/477MWh. The Hallett BESS will start off with a world-leading 50MW of capacity. It will have five-hour storage potential, marking a significant step forward in the technology of energy storage for the region.
EnergyAustralia’s trading and transition executive Daniel Nugent underlined the importance of the project. He echoed this sentiment when we spoke at the launch event at Hallett Power Station.
“By building the battery at Hallett, we are making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time. Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built, and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.” – Daniel Nugent, EnergyAustralia trading and transition executive
Adrian Marziano, NHOA Energy Australia’s Vice President, said NH O A takes pride in supporting this innovative project.
“We are proud to support EnergyAustralia in a project that combines advanced grid-forming technology with a strong institutional framework such as the Capacity Investment Scheme, while making smart use of existing infrastructure.” – Adrian Marziano, NHOA Energy Australia and Pacific VP
NHOA Energy, EnergyAustralia and Enerven have established a strategic alliance. Collectively, they are focused on improving energy solutions that increase grid reliability and strengthen local economies. The Hallett BESS represents yet another step in South Australia’s broader clean energy transition away from unsustainable practices.
