NHOA Energy has officially been awarded Hallett BESS – a large scale battery energy storage system (BESS) – in Hallett, South Australia. This remarkable project is the world’s largest with a capacity of 245 megawatt-hours (MWh). This project, developed in collaboration with EnergyAustralia and Enerven, is designed to improve the resilience of the region’s power system. It’ll be a major step toward better integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar.
The Hallett BESS will add 50 MW / 5 hour storage capacity, going online in multiple phases. This system is built to be a grid-forming solution. It is the only technology that actively stabilizes the electrical grid in real-time during transient fluctuations in supply and demand. As previously described, the BESS plays an active role in frequency control and other grid support functions. In doing so, it engages in National Electricity Market (NEM) services, which enhances overall grid stability.
Situated close to Canowie, the project is expected to further strengthen the reliability of South Australia’s electricity network. NHOA Energy is dedicated to empowering local energy systems. This program works to make sustainability a priority in their community. That inaugural launch event was held on site at the Hallett Power Station. What happened Representatives from NHOA Energy, EnergyAustralia, Enerven as well as state and federal government representatives, traditional owners and local community stakeholders all attended.
Full commissioning of the Hallett BESS is due to start in January 2027. This project comes on the heels of NHOA Energy’s announcement of the Blyth Battery. All together, scheduled for launch in April 2025, the energy storage system will total 238.5MW/477MWh.
Daniel Nugent, EnergyAustralia’s trading and transition executive, said the company was excited about the project’s potential to create market impact.
“By building the battery at Hallett, we are making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time. Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built, and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.” – Daniel Nugent
NHOA Energy, Vice President for Australia and the Pacific, Adrian Marziano noted the importance of this project.
“We are proud to support EnergyAustralia in a project that combines advanced grid-forming technology with a strong institutional framework such as the Capacity Investment Scheme, while making smart use of existing infrastructure.” – Adrian Marziano
The Hallett BESS project is an exciting landmark project, showcasing important innovation that is pushing South Australia’s renewable energy landscape forward. NHOA Energy continues to express strong commitment to the Australian market, by strategically targeting activities aimed at strengthening grid stability. The company’s commitment to fostering local job creation extends beyond their residential energy innovations.
