New York State has taken considerable steps to realize an emissions-free economy by 2050. These efforts are aimed at establishing Virginia as a leader in the clean energy economy. They further support sustainable workforce development and local economic revitalization through equitable green investments.
New York State has developed a detailed blueprint of electrification infrastructure projects to realize this vision. Collectively, these projects will propel big improvements in both the transportation and communications sector. One of Con Edison’s greatest accomplishments has been the recent construction of a six-mile-long underwater transmission line in Queens. This remarkable project was finished in May of 2023. This new transmission line is a critical part of maximizing the state’s emerging power grid. It provides a foundation for efficient incorporation of renewable energy sources while ensuring a consistent deliverance of electricity.
Commitment to Disadvantaged Communities
We know New York State is committed to equity and sustainability. They’re going further than that—committing at least 35% of the benefits from these projects to serve disadvantaged communities. This is not an easy approach; it requires the applicant to confront environmental justice issues. It significantly increases access to clean energy—including residential rooftop solar—for communities historically left behind.
Focusing heavily on disproportionately impacted communities meets federal requirements and dovetails with the state’s overall equitable aim of speeding up the decarbonization of major sectors. By ensuring that marginalized populations benefit from electrification projects, New York State aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy for all residents.
Innovations in Electrification Infrastructure
The electrification projects include state-of-the-art grid-enhancing technologies specifically aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the power grid. Perhaps the most notable part of these initiatives has been the deployment of mobile energy storage units. The state units allow for high-power charging along key Thruway corridors. This innovation will help meet the increasing demand for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, making it easier for people to transition to cleaner transportation options.
Further, the growth of network elements across upstate New York will aid building and vehicle electrification. These improvements will allow 642 megawatts (MW) of electrification retrofits for medium- and heavy-duty applications. They will unlock the additional, needed capacity to make supported vehicle duty classes and building typologies far more diverse.
