New 400MW Peaking Facility to Boost Energy Security in New Brunswick

We’re thrilled to hear about this golden collaboration between NB Power. They’re moving forward on a 400MW peaking facility as the RIGS project in partnership with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council. This new facility will be built along Route 940 in Midgic, Centre Village. It wants to improve energy security for ratepayers in New Brunswick, and it’s expected to start serving customers by 2028.

The initiative was launched to help address the electricity demand crisis caused by the rising demand for electricity from population growth in the province. As a result, the RIGS project is taking bold, important steps to address the energy supply challenges that are on the horizon. Experts warn that a deficit might come crashing down as early as 2028. As a result, it not only adds new capacity, but by providing the additional capacity, it seeks to prevent shortfalls predicted in the 2030s from occurring.

Collaboration and Location

For the next phase of RIGS, this facility will be built on lands currently owned by NB Power. This strategic placement will maximize efficiency and effectiveness in energy generation and delivery. The partnership with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council highlights the importance of collaboration in meeting the region’s energy needs.

“This project not only aims to fulfill the energy requirements of New Brunswickers but strengthens our relationships with local communities,” said Lori Clark from NB Power. Our vision is for a prosperous, vibrant, inclusive and sustainable New Brunswick powered by secure, reliable, affordable energy. Launching this generation expansion project addresses the pressing need to enhance our grid’s reliability and security to meet the unprecedented growth in energy demand.

Addressing Future Energy Needs

As New Brunswick’s population grows, the demand for electricity is expected to increase. The RIGS project serves as an essential step toward ensuring that residents have access to reliable power when needed most. Its peaking capabilities will be useful for responding most rapidly during peak electricity demand. This immediate responsiveness is what makes the grid stable.

Jeff Canon, a representative from PROENERGY, emphasized the importance of this project: “Our team has a deep understanding of Eastern Canada. PROENERGY appreciates the trust placed in us by NB Power and the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council to provide the reliable fast-start power they need.”

Timeline for Implementation

With commercial operations slated to begin in 2028, the RIGS project is one of the largest investments planned to date in New Brunswick’s energy future. NB Power remains dedicated to charting a course through the changing energy landscape, so that electricity is always affordable and reliable for every New Brunswicker.

Looking beyond 2028, we’re intent on establishing the best possible path forward through this demonstration project, and through all of our work. Clark added. “It is crucial that we secure additional electricity and capacity through this project to confidently navigate the energy transition.”
