Iberdrola España has begun construction on two large scale solar power plants in Valencia. This is a significant strategic move towards increasing local renewable energy generation. Cofrentes I and Ayora 1 both are awe-inspiring plants. Collectively, they’ll produce a combined capacity of 366 megawatts (MW) and are expected to come online before the end of 2026. This effort dovetails nicely with Iberdrola’s targeted strategy towards photovoltaic investments. With a strong focus on renewable power purchase agreements, it builds cooperative relationships with a variety of investors.
With the addition of Cofrentes I plant, the total capacity increases by 184 MW. In parallel, Ayora 1 will make it even better with another 182 MW under development. The combined value of all of these projects is €252 million (about $293.5 million). Once online, the solar facilities will produce more than 650 GWh of renewable energy each year. This output, combined, will provide enough power for 200,000 homes. It will be key to reducing carbon emissions. This initiative will stop about 52,000 tons of CO₂ from being emitted annually.
Investment and Environmental Impact
We have a clear investment strategy Iberdrola España’s investment strategy focuses on increasing the energy autonomy of the region in a sustainable manner. In addition, the company recently signed a 1,250 GWh power purchase agreement (PPA) with Selex Gruppo Commerciale for clean energy. This appeal is a clear indication that DOER is serious about promoting and encouraging these types of renewable energy partnerships.
Their generation of over 650 GWh per year is projected to have a dramatic effect on the local energy mix. This will deliver clean, competitively priced energy generated from home-grown resources. This helps accelerate the region’s transition to renewable energy. It further supports broader environmental justice efforts to combat climate change.
Local Economic Benefits
The construction of the Cofrentes I and Ayora 1 solar plants will provide substantial economic benefits to the local community. At peak construction periods, the projects are expected to employ a total of nearly 1,300 workers. Most of these workers will be local residents from the Ayora-Cofrentes valley. This flood of new jobs will stimulate the local and regional economies. Residents will get to participate in an art-centered project that builds community bonds and delivers lasting value.
Among them are Ingeteam, Eiffage, Ormazabal, Mesa and OHLA, with which Iberdrola is already collaborating for the execution of the project and which are Spanish suppliers. Iberdrola brings in local suppliers to help strengthen regional economies. This method lays the groundwork for more cooperative work in creating renewable energy.
Future Outlook
Iberdrola España is currently building both Cofrentes I and Ayora 1. This advance breaks the ground for many more renewable energy projects to come all over Spain. This small group of solar plants will lead to successfully demonstrating an effective model for future initiatives. They’ll help increase energy independence and cut greenhouse gas emissions nationwide.
