That’s not surprising, as Iberdrola has deeply embedded a commitment to renewable energy. They’ve recently completed planning for the Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. At €1.28 billion this is a massive project. 21 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 megawatts, producing clean energy sufficient to power about 315,000 local homes. The 315-megawatt project has already received approval from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. It’s currently scheduled to enter service in the last quarter of 2026.
The Windanker project marks a significant step forward for Iberdrola. In this regard, just last October, the company won an 88% stake in the German firm ENW. This acquisition deepens Iberdrola’s interests in Germany. Equally important, the move advances the company’s strategic vision to be a major player in the offshore wind space. The company will hold a majority 51% stake in the Windanker assets, allowing it to control and manage the operation effectively.
Iberdrola’s chairman, Ignacio Galán, stated that the Windanker project represents the company’s third major offshore wind initiative in Germany. He touched upon the essential role renewable energy plays in meeting sustainability objectives and lowering carbon emissions. The project has firm long-term contracts in place for the entirety of its output. This creates a reliable revenue source and accelerates the development of clean energy in the Commonwealth’s most economically distressed region.
To ensure best-in-class operational excellence, Iberdrola will offer a complete and competitive operation and maintenance service for the Windanker wind farm. The company further committed to corporate function active management for the project, across the enterprise. This rare step will ensure that it delivers the best possible standards of efficiency and reliability.
As part of this effort, Iberdrola has joined up with Kansai Electric for a particularly ambitious collaboration. Together they will jointly acquire and invest in the Windanker offshore wind farm. Kansai Electric’s executive vice-president, Toru Kuwahara, underlined the importance of this partnership in boosting renewable energy projects in Japan. The combined expertise of both companies is expected to bolster the project’s success and facilitate the transition to sustainable energy sources.
The Windanker offshore wind farm, meanwhile, represents a further move by Iberdrola to increase its renewable energy footprint. It showcases the firm’s dedication to developing deep global connections. As renewable energy technologies take center stage, Iberdrola has remained at the forefront of offshore wind innovations.
