Hynamics UK, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, has joined forces with Hy24. Collectively, they are driving the development of the Fawley green hydrogen project in Hampshire, England. Together, the collaboration will primarily work on securing funding for a hydrogen electrolytic production facility worth around £300 million ($407 million). Locally, the project would begin to generate low-carbon hydrogen that has the potential to drastically lower the area’s carbon footprint.
In April 2025, the UK government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) selected the Fawley green hydrogen project. This project will be funded via the government’s subsidy scheme. This recognition is a testament to the federal government’s support for innovative energy solutions that are paving the way to decarbonisation. The facility would include a 120 megawatt (MW) electrolyser. This installation to be built next to the Esso Fawley refinery is one of the biggest steps along the UK’s hydrogen value chain so far.
Project Details and Environmental Impact
The £30 million Fawley green hydrogen project will replace heavy fuel oil and grey hydrogen. In this way, it leads to more sustainable local energy production from low-carbon hydrogen. The initiative is expected to reduce up to 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, showcasing its far-reaching environmental impact.
Pierre de Raphélis-Soissan, a representative from Hynamics, was appreciative of the collaboration and shared his excitement about it, saying,
“I am delighted with this partnership with Hy24, which marks a new stage in the development of Hynamics’ projects in the United Kingdom.”
Hynamics UK and Hy24 combine to power new cutting-edge energy technologies. This joint effort highlights their commitment to advancing decarbonization goals around the globe.
Strategic Importance of the Partnership
Hy24’s involvement in exclusive negotiations to finance the Fawley project marks its initial significant foray into the UK market. Amir Sharifi, head of Hy24 UK, Southern Europe and MENA, praised the strong policy environment in the UK. He argued this is the kind of environment that provides the certainty and clarity that decarbonisation efforts thrive upon.
“The policy landscape in the UK is providing the certainty and clarity needed to enable decarbonisation projects at the right scale and pace. We see this as a very positive signal and a strong opportunity for Hy24 to expand into the UK for the first time, alongside partners who are deeply committed to the energy transition.” – Amir Sharifi.
This new partnership is the largest public-private investment in green technology. It indicates a deepening of trust that has been built between the two organizations over the past three years.
Future Outlook on Hydrogen Development
The Fawley green hydrogen project is considered a milestone for both Hy24 and Hynamics UK as they navigate the evolving landscape of hydrogen production. The UK has shown admirable focus and perseverance in catalyzing a strong hydrogen value chain.
