HydroWing Morlais Project Expands Capacity with Additional 10MW Award

HydroWing has increased the planned generation capacity for its Morlais tidal energy project. Once built, this project will be the world’s biggest tidal energy development to date. The £5.7m project, based in Anglesey, is designed to provide clean, controllable and stable power to the local grid on the island. As part of that expansion, capacity will be increased by an additional 10 megawatts (MW). This will be done through the installation of 18 HydroWing HW3 tidal energy devices.

Phase three of the HydroWing Morlais Project is planned for deployment in 2030. The first device with their HydroWing has been planned to be deployed at Morlais in 2027 as part of the current phase 1A. This ambitious strategic timeline once again shows our unequivocal dedication to the deployment of tidal energy in Anglesey and beyond. We’re putting new emphasis on economies of scale to increase efficiency and productivity.

Project Overview and Timeline

The HydroWing Morlais Project will use 18 HydroWing HW3 tidal energy devices, each with a capacity of 1.67MW. This promising technology is intended to be a game-changer that makes the most of tidal streams’ potential. We anticipate completing the entire project by 2030. This accomplishment would be another major milestone for renewable energy generation.

This is a very important expansion of initiatives on integrated community energy business models,” Richard Parkinson, CEO, Inyanga Marine Energy Group. He stated,

“This latest award allows us to focus on economies of scale and drive momentum towards delivering clean and stable power to the grid in Anglesey at an industrial scale.”

The project’s phased approach includes ongoing commitment to building capacity and momentum, leading to the ultimate goal of developing and deploying sustainable energy solutions.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Involvement

Located on the North coast of Wales, Menter Môn Morlais’s partnerships have positioned them at the heart of HydroWing. Andy Billcliff, chief executive of Menter Môn Morlais welcomed the news. He remarked,

“Today’s announcement is fantastic news for our tidal stream project at Morlais, cementing our position at the global forefront of tidal stream technology.”

These partnerships reflect a deep dedication to supporting the growth of tidal energy projects in the area, while helping to build a more sustainable future.

Future Prospects

With the HydroWing Morlais Project, they are leading the charge. This major project will help to enhance the UK’s renewable energy supply, it will create jobs and economic activity benefits in Anglesey. The upcoming deployment of the HydroWing HW3 devices will be a key part to accomplishing these objectives.

Their expected first deployment later this decade will be a major step towards fulfilling the project’s visionary promise. Despite the challenges, stakeholders continue to find hope in what these projects can mean for local communities and the environment.
