Google Cloud and Westinghouse Forge Partnership to Revolutionize Nuclear Energy with AI

That’s why Google Cloud and Westinghouse Electric Company — a global leader in nuclear energy — have entered a strategic partnership to transform the nuclear energy industry. This collaboration will leverage Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence (AI) technologies alongside Westinghouse’s extensive expertise in nuclear innovation. Our aim with each one is to continue blazing a new trail aimed at creating a smarter and safer energy future.

In a statement about the new partnership, Kyle Jessen, Google Cloud’s commercial industries managing director, stressed the importance of their collaboration. He noted that the combination of Google Cloud’s AI capabilities and Westinghouse’s deep-rooted knowledge in nuclear technology will create solutions that enhance efficiency and safety in nuclear operations.

The partnership has a promising start, having launched the HiVE and bertha AI solutions in September 2024. These innovations are built upon over seventy years of proprietary data and nuclear domain expertise at Westinghouse. Of course, this company has a clear and proud 100-year history of leading the way in nuclear innovation.

Key Developments in Nuclear Innovation

Unlike most highly effective government – nonprofit partnerships, this partnership focuses on an over-arching contract. It involves the assembly and joining of nine vessel sectors into a sealed, throughbred torus. This component is essential for nuclear fusion to occur. It has the potential to usher in an exciting new clean energy economy. The hermetically sealed torus is a key design feature in the nuclear fusion operations that keep these devices safe and efficient.

We’re thrilled to see Google Cloud and Westinghouse hit these amazing milestones. Through those efforts, they were able to autonomously generate and optimize work packages for the modular off-site construction of the AP1000 reactor. This success announcement by July 16, 2025, demonstrates to the public that the partnership is producing real results already within the first five years.

“As the only fully licensed, construction-ready modular reactor available today, our AP1000 technology is the quickest way to add new sources of affordable and abundant nuclear energy to the US grid.” – Dan Sumner, Westinghouse interim CEO

The Role of AI in Enhancing Nuclear Operations

The smart adoption of these AI technologies across nuclear energy operations is a groundbreaking approach to solving the industry’s most pressing challenges. Weston added that AI gives companies in this space an advantage over competitors. By leveraging AI, Westinghouse wants to maximize the efficiency of the building process and the operational efficiency of nuclear power plants.

“Artificial intelligence is not merely a tool; it can give companies a critical competitive advantage. Westinghouse is demonstrating what’s possible.” – [Source not specified]

The HiVE and bertha solutions make nuclear operations more efficient. They cut out red tape and strengthen their data-fueled decision-making powers.

Looking Ahead

Google Cloud and Westinghouse partnered together on a multi-cloud strategy to promote new nuclear technology. Through their collaboration, they’re building the energy infrastructure for today, without compromising on safety or sustainability. Both companies continue to iterate on their technologies. They’re positioned to take the lead in changing the public’s perception and understanding of, and trust in, nuclear energy.
