Geronimo Power has officially broken ground on Portage Solar, a milestone renewable energy project for the state of Wisconsin. This ambitious new project joins with Burns & McDonnell to unlock solar energy at 250 megawatts. It’s expected to bring a $2.1 billion impact to the local economy and create 29,000 jobs.
The Portage Solar project is expected to provide an impressive $24 million in tax revenue to the surrounding county and townships. Finally, it will generate an estimated 300 construction jobs, with a focus on hiring Wisconsin craft laborers. These developments are indicative of Geronimo Power’s focus on ensuring grassroots engagement and community driven economic development in the area.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
As far as the economic impact goes, the Portage Solar project isn’t just about jobs. The Apple River project promises to produce stunning outcomes. Combined, they are projected to give an annual economic impact of more than $100 million direct economic benefits for Wisconsin. Geronimo Power estimates that during its first two decades, the project will generate more than $73 million in direct economic benefits.
“We anticipate the addition of Portage Solar to our Wisconsin portfolio will contribute more than $100 million statewide – that’s a huge milestone for us and a big win for our project communities.” – Geronimo Power
This financial influx is expected to enhance local infrastructure, support community services, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. In addition to creating 6,000 permanent jobs within the development, it will energize local businesses as more people travel to the outlet center.
Renewable Energy Commitment
In October 2024, Geronimo Power signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for the Portage Solar project, underscoring the growing demand for renewable energy sources. Leslie M Duke, chair and CEO of Burns & McDonnell, underlined the importance of the project. To meet a rising global demand for clean, affordable energy.
“As demand for data centres continues to grow, so does the need for reliable, renewable energy. We are proud to support Geronimo Power in the build-out of the Portage site. Together with local union halls and contractors, we are supporting the workforce and strengthening the community as we build.” – Leslie M Duke
Geronimo Power and Burns & McDonnell have partnered to showcase their deep commitment to renewable energy. In addition to bringing their business to the area, they’re committed to forming the local workforce.
A Positive Impact on Local Economies
The Portage Solar project represents the tangible value of renewable energy. Its ability to shape local economies for the better. Joe Ibrahim, a spokesperson for Geronimo Power, emphasized this point by stating:
“The true value of renewable energy isn’t in the power it provides to the local grid. It’s about the immensely positive impact on local economies in the form of new revenue streams and job creation.” – Joe Ibrahim
As construction continues, the project’s hope is to continue providing both concrete benefits to the community and help move Wisconsin closer to its renewable energy ambitions.
