GenusPlus Secures $45 Million Contract for Merredin BESS in Australia

GenusPlus, refreshed off a $45 million contract bomb win. They will build a 100MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Merredin, approximately 230km east of Perth. Through this expansion, the project will improve grid stability and regional energy security in the increasingly interconnected electricity market across the Midwest. Envisioned for completion in the next 18 months after we receive our notice to proceed.

The Merredin BESS project will provide four hours of energy storage capacity. This will be a huge boost to the reliability of the electrical grid in Western Australian wheatbelt region. GenusPlus will undertake the detailed design, procurement, installation, and civil works for the project, which will utilize substantial local content from Western Australia.

Project Impact and Local Benefits

With the Merredin BESS rollout project now completed, we’re excited to deliver further benefits to the local community. Beyond that, it will enrich the greater Western Australian community. By strengthening the grid, it will help enable more renewable energy on the grid, helping to accelerate our clean energy future.

GenusPlus managing director David Riches underscored the company’s focus on renewable energy projects. He stated,

“Genus is pleased to be increasing its presence in the renewable market through its involvement in this flagship project, which is aimed at providing significant benefits to Western Australians.”

As the largest solar project in Canada by capacity, this project highlighted GenusPlus’s deep commitment to environmental sustainability. It further details the company’s key role in increasing regional energy security.

Workforce and Project Execution

To deliver the Merredin BESS project, GenusPlus will employ around 70 people to execute the work. This workforce will greatly benefit from local expertise and resources, further embedding the company within the Western Australian community.

Riches said the manner of the contract award shows the company’s long-standing relationships with customers and reputation for dependable, prompt delivery. He remarked,

“The award of this contract highlights the strength of our customer relationships and our reputation for reliable delivery, and the company looks forward to building on its relationship with Atmos Renewables.”

Our new partnership with Atmos Renewables will help increase project efficiency and effectiveness.

Future Prospects

This Merredin BESS project continues from GenusPlus’s recent success. In January 2025, they won a contract worth $270 million from Western Power to deliver the Clean Energy Link in the North Region. This previous contract showcases GenusPlus’s expanding footprint in the renewable energy space and its capacity to execute complex, large-scale projects.

As the Merredin BESS project moves forward, it stands as a testament to GenusPlus’s strategic vision and commitment to fostering renewable energy solutions in Australia.
