GCL System Integration has successfully completed a pioneering floating solar energy project at the Soneva Secret Resort in the Maldives. This major innovation, which was officially completed in January of 2026, is the result of tremendous collaboration alongside our long-term partner Ocean Sun. Beyond saving the resort deferred energy consumption costs while reducing its environmental footprint, the project aims to change the way people on the island use energy.
The 20-MW floating solar system uses more than 4,200 TOPCon marine floating modules, provided by GCL System Integration. This cutting-edge technology will supply as much as 90% of the resort’s total electricity requirements. It will thoughtfully replace the old reliable diesel generators that have powered the facility up to this point. This transition is an important step to prevailing together towards clean energy independence for island communities and R.E.M.
Environmental Impact and Energy Savings
The newly installed system is estimated to significantly low one million litters of diesel fuel in the environment per year. This reduction goes directly to the bottom line, reducing the resort’s operating costs. At the same time, it significantly reduces the carbon emissions associated with its energy use. This project will reduce carbon emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes per year. It will go a long way to make positive strides in the fight against climate change.
By putting an end to reliance on diesel generators, the Alexandria floating solar project represents a new, innovative use of renewable energy resources. When the system comes online, the clean electricity it produces will be put to immediate use. This upgrade will enhance the resort’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Collaboration and Technological Innovation
In addition to technical know-how, GCL System Integration’s partnership with Ocean Sun was crucial to ensuring this project’s success. They utilized new technology and experienced know-how. Combined, they conceived a very powerful floating solar solution to some of the most unique challenges posed by a marine environment. TOPCon marine floating modules increase the system’s efficiency. These render it resistant to the extreme weather short bursts common to tropical climates.
Their collaborative efforts are a testament to the power of strategic partnerships in driving innovative and transformative advancements in renewable energy solutions. By leveraging each company’s strengths, they have set a new standard for floating solar projects, particularly in island and coastal regions where land availability is limited.
Future of Clean Energy on Islands
The floating solar project at Soneva Secret Resort hits an important milestone. This accomplishment gets islands and remote communities one step closer to their goal of energy self-sufficiency. With tourism frequently at the heart of their economies, transitioning to renewable energy sources will help protect these beautiful destinations and achieve long-term sustainable development.
With GCL System Integration’s innovative approach and Ocean Sun’s expertise, this project serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at enhancing energy security through clean technologies. The broader push to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy is sure to ignite more such projects throughout the region. This momentum has further transformed into… creating a greener future.
