Fugro has won another big market share contract. They will assist with construction activity on the 128 MW Youde offshore wind farm on Taiwan’s western, near-shore coast. This wind farm will serve as Taiwan’s Round 3.2 offshore wind tender. It has a truly astonishing capacity of 700 megawatts (MW). The detailed geotechnical fieldwork campaign for the project has only recently started. We want to see it completed by Q4 2025 at the latest.
The Youde offshore wind farm is essential to Taiwan’s energy plan. Taiwan has set a total installed offshore wind capacity target at 13.1 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. Fugro has a deep-seated commitment to realizing the ambitious goal it has set for itself. To advance this mission, it will be deploying the Taiwan-flagged vessel, the Pacific Hornbill, operated by IOVTEC.
Commitment to Offshore Wind Development
Fugro has a long, proven experience in providing value-adding geo-data solutions to offshore wind clients in Taiwan since 2016. Shalu Shajahan, the Asia Pacific regional business line director at Fugro, noted that the company’s dedication to the project was deep. She further emphasized the faith that Shinfox Energy has shown in them.
“We are honoured to be selected by Shinfox Energy for this landmark project in Taiwan and to be part of the development of the Youde offshore wind farm. This award showcases the trust that Shinfox has placed in our track record of delivering high-value geo-data solutions to offshore wind clients in Taiwan since 2016.” – Shalu Shajahan
Significantly, this contract not only highlights Fugro’s expertise, but reinforces Fugro’s dedication to advancing offshore wind capabilities in Taiwan. By using its extensive local know-how and resources, Fugro will deliver integrated, high-quality services which contribute to the region’s energy transition.
Strategic Importance of the Youde Project
The Youde offshore wind farm is a crucial part of Taiwan’s larger push towards renewable energy investment. And the federal government has set some pretty ambitious targets, too! Their leadership to raise 30 GW of offshore wind capacity is helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels and build up clean energy alternatives.
Fugro is proud to contribute further to this collaborative project, helping advance national goals. This participation reflects broader trends. The tides are turning toward renewable energy investments in Taiwan. This specialized geotechnical fieldwork will be key in determining soil conditions that allow engineers to ensure the structural integrity of the wind farm’s foundations.
Vincent Tsai from Fugro IOVTEC, which deployed a drone to the site, noted the importance of this project in building local capacity.
“By leveraging our ISO-accredited local laboratory, we will deliver integrated high-quality services. This milestone reinforces Fugro IOVTEC’s commitment to strengthening domestic offshore wind capabilities and building long-term partnerships that support Taiwan’s energy transition.” – Vincent Tsai
Looking Ahead
As the nationwide campaign for geotechnical fieldwork continues, stakeholders expressed hope that such groundwork will bring positive strides toward the development of renewable energy infrastructure. The completion of the Youde offshore wind farm will contribute significantly to Taiwan’s energy landscape and serve as a model for future projects in the region.
