Foresight Invests in Major Solar Projects to Meet New Zealand’s Energy Demand

Foresight Group’s £50 million investment is intended to accelerate energy investment across New Zealand. Their stated intent is to undergird the development of at least 300 megawatts (MW) of near-term solar projects. This strategic play comes at a time of unprecedented change in the country’s electricity market. This accelerating change is fueled by the rising demand for low-emission energy solutions.

The investment will complete a dozen solar and battery energy storage systems, which are expected to begin going online in 2026 and 2027. Among these key projects is an 89 MW-ac (MWac) solar plus battery installation in Masterton. A 106 MRac project under development in Darfield. At the same time, planners are advancing a third system — 72 MWac — for Dannevirke.

New Zealand’s largely renewable electricity market is about to undergo a 25% increase in projected demand over the next decade. Here are five reasons behind this remarkable wave. The increasing adoption of electric vehicles and rapid expansion of data centers around the region have both been central to this trend. Foresight’s investment further supports the nation’s transition to a clean energy economy by working to meet this growing demand.

When we started NZ Clean Energy (NZCE), we had an ambitious vision. Harry Simpson, CEO We’re looking to reboot the pipeline of solar and storage projects down our whole length of New Zealand. He stressed the importance of this partnership with Foresight and the path it has opened to bring these projects further along toward construction.

The projects are the result of nearly a decade of site identification and development work by the company. Foresight targets only the most appropriate locations for solar energy production. This commitment strengthens New Zealand’s renewable energy resources.

Our ability to advance more complex projects into construction while still deepening the platform is now possible,” continued Simpson. This collaboration begins from a place of recognizing urgent need for action and understanding of energy issues. It’s about establishing a solid foundation for future energy needs.
