Engie Partners with Solarcycle to Launch Innovative Precycling Initiative

Engie, a global leader in renewable energy and energy management, has entered a truly novel partnership. They are joining forces with Solarcycle, a mission-driven company focused on recycling solar panels. This partnership takes a proactive approach by incorporating recycling into the development phases of solar projects. This is an important milestone on the path toward sustainability for the rapidly growing utility-scale solar sector. By adding precycling tactics into power purchase agreements (PPAs), Engie leads the way to environmentally responsible contracts that include waste reduction as an essential component.

Engie has made significant inroads into renewable energy. They currently have 14 gigawatts (GW) of contracted Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) locked in for their projects. This includes 4.3 GW already signed up in 2024, continuing from the 2.7 GW booked in the last calendar year. Engie is committed to being at the forefront of developing renewable energy solutions. In the process, they address the growing challenge of what to do with retiring solar panels.

Advancing Sustainability Through Precycling

Collectively, Engie’s precycling pilot project will help to recycle one million solar panels. These panels are the result of 375 megawatt (MW) projects throughout the Midwest that are beginning to age out of their operational life. Solarcycle as a partner accelerates our recycling ambitions. At the same time, it prevents useful materials from being wasted in landfills. Solarcycle projects that Engie’s program will keep 48 million pounds of materials out of landfills and the waste stream.

The effects of this new initiative go further than just reducing waste. Engie estimates that its precycling program will stop the equivalent of 33,000 tons of carbon emissions from being released. Climate change will be one of the most critical challenges our nation faces. Caroline Mead, Engie’s power marketing senior vice-president, emphasized that this pioneering strategy sets a new precedent for the utility-scale solar industry by showcasing how circular economy principles can be implemented effectively without complex regulatory intervention.

A New Standard for Power Purchase Agreements

Engie’s approach to incorporating precycling into PPAs is a new direction for how we develop and operate renewable energy projects. By making recycling just another standard part of a project agreement, Engie is taking important steps to ensure a sustainable lifecycle for solar technology. This innovative initiative costs nothing up-front, making it a financially attractive option for all stakeholders engaged in the development of renewable energy projects.

This leading-edge approach would set a new precedent in the field, prompting other companies to go further as well. Solarcycle co-founder and chief commercial officer Jesse Simons touched on the strength of working collaboratively with Engie. He’s convinced that bringing sustainability into the initial planning process increases value for a project while protecting the environment.

Looking Towards the Future

Engie’s precycling pilot is expected to conclude sometime in the 2020s. This will set the stage for a better, more sustainable solar future. The cost of renewable energy is now among the world’s lowest. Creatively designed initiatives like this one will be crucial to responsibly channel the environmental impacts of solar panels.
