Eku recently completed two large utility-scale energy storage projects in the UK. These initiatives represent smart steps to strengthen energy security and reliability for our nation’s electricity consumers. Combined, the projects Loudwater BESS and Basildon BESS increase the national grid’s capacity by 130 MWh. Together, they’re a powerful combination when it comes to improving our energy supply. Under the leadership of CEO Daniel Burrows, Eku Energy is leading the charge to an equitable energy transition. The company has focused on providing safe, reliable and high-quality battery storage solutions.
Loudwater BESS and Basildon BESS are designed to improve grid support by offering balancing and ancillary services throughout the UK’s energy network. The Basildon BESS project features a 28MW battery energy storage system. With a capacity of 56MWh, this project further cements Eku Energy’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
Objectives of the Projects
The overall aim of all of these projects is to improve energy security throughout the UK. As the demand for clean energy increases, Eku Energy aims to provide cost-effective solutions that can meet the evolving needs of consumers. The startup underscores the critical role that battery storage systems will play as storm resiliency infrastructure. These systems are helping us make the most out of these existing renewable energy sources.
Daniel Burrows articulated the broader vision behind these projects, stating, “The commissioning of Loudwater BESS and Basildon BESS creates diversity in our operating portfolio in the UK. Our growing operating portfolio creates further opportunities to support our customers by structuring innovative long-term contracts.”
Collaboration and Partnerships
Eku Energy’s successful commissioning of these projects is a testament to cooperation working hand-in-hand between the electric and petroleum sectors. The production of both sites was made possible through a collaborative public-private partnership with NHOA Energy.
Lucie Kanius-Dujardin, global managing director at NHOA Energy, said the key to success in this project’s mission will be collaboration. She noted, “These projects exemplify how trusted, high-performance partnerships are essential for the energy transition. The delivery of both sites in parallel required close coordination between NHOA Energy and Eku Energy.”
Future Endeavors
Eku Energy is preparing to embark on an equally exciting adventure within UK energy storage. They hope to have this fourth project under construction by late 2026! The company has committed to doubling its clean energy portfolio. At the same time, this step helps the UK accelerate its transition to a net-zero energy system.
