Edison Expands Renewable Energy Capacity with New Developments

Edison, the second largest energy company in Italy, is currently committed to building 500 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy by 2026. This ambitious project is now supported by a €200 million financing agreement signed on November 21. This proposal will more than triple the company’s current renewable generation capacity. We still expect it to over double in the next handful of years. Included in this expansion is Edison’s commitment to decrease the number of wind turbines in operation by 73%.

In the past two years, Edison has both added and brought online more than 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of new programmable capacity. This accomplishment is a major testament to Edison’s commitment to driving innovative renewable energy technologies forward. Edison now has about 8 GW of installed capacity in Italy. That eye-popping number is thanks to over 250 generating stations—including hydroelectric plants, wind farms, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and combined cycle gas turbine facilities.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

In addition to increasing capacity, the opening of Edisons new construction sites would create job opportunities for an influx of roughly 1,000 workers. This development not only enhances the local economy but engages around 200 supplier companies that will contribute to the projects. Edison’s efforts aim to foster sustainable growth while addressing Italy’s energy needs.

Nicola Monti, CEO of Edison, called this new initiative “a briefing shot” for the sector.

“Edison confirms its leadership in Italy’s energy transition, a result of which we are particularly proud. The success achieved in the recent FER-X auctions demonstrates our ability to be competitive in the market from an industrial and technological point of view, but also the solidity of our development model.” – Nicola Monti

Diverse Renewable Portfolio

Edison is expected to file soon a portfolio of about 300 MW of wind energy. It will include about 200 MW of solar. The firm’s projects are focused mostly in the southern Italian regions of Piedmont, Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia, and Sicily. Notable projects consist of photovoltaic plants in Sicily (55 MW), Campania (27 MW), and Veneto (16 MW), along with wind farms in Basilicata (9 MW) and Abruzzo (80 MW).

Edison’s ongoing work to create a sustainable future is shown by its continuous investments into renewable and clean energy sources. By expanding its portfolio and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, the company positions itself as a key player in Italy’s transition toward a greener economy. Together, these planned developments showcase Edison’s proactive approach and directly align with national goals for decarbonization and clean energy advancement.

“This excellent result allows us to accelerate our growth in renewables, with the aim of doubling our installed green capacity in the coming years and making a concrete contribution to achieving the country’s decarbonisation targets.” – Nicola Monti

Commitment to Sustainability

Edison’s commitment to sustainability is evident through its ongoing investments in renewable energy. By expanding its portfolio and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, the company positions itself as a key player in Italy’s transition toward a greener economy. The planned developments not only reflect Edison’s proactive approach but also align with national goals for decarbonization.
