Thanks to DayOne for making a giant leap toward greener energy. They recently signed their fourth ESA – TNB, of Malaysia’s vertically integrated utility. By October 2024, we completed this Cooperation Agreement, together with a parallel memorandum of understanding (MoU). These initiatives do directly help data centers via the Green Lane Pathway and OSC (One-Stop Center) initiatives. This collaborative effort is truly a groundbreaking achievement. As part of this announcement, it marks Malaysia’s inaugural Clean Energy Renewable Supply Scheme (CRESS) contract.
The innovative CRESS deal included a commitment to provide up to 500 megawatts of green energy. The program will serve to concretely address increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions in Malaysia’s fast-growing digital infrastructure ecosystem. This electric programming provision is especially needful for hyperscale data centres that need stable, scalable energy inputs to run their operations unimpeded.
A Strategic Collaboration
For his part, TNB’s President & CEO Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan called this collaboration “imperative.”
“As the first CRESS agreement to deliver up to 500 megawatts of green energy, this partnership is a powerful signal of how a strategic collaboration can unlock reliable and scalable clean energy solutions for Malaysia’s most demanding digital infrastructures, including hyperscale data centres.” – Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan
This partnership is indicative of the bold and widespread commitment to transform Malaysia’s energy sector into one that is sustainable and responsible. By facilitating direct access for medium and high-voltage corporate consumers to clean energy through TNB’s grid system, the CRESS initiative, as introduced by Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), aims to significantly enhance the availability of renewable energy.
Commitment to Sustainability
DayOne’s also committed to transitioning renewable energy throughout its national operations. In keeping with corporate responsibility goals, the company also committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. DayOne’s CEO, Leah Bolger, emphasized the organization’s commitment to localism and environmental sustainability.
“We are proud to lead by example in Malaysia through the country’s first CRESS agreement. Sustainability is core to how we build, operate and grow. At DayOne, we are not only transitioning our campuses to renewable energy — we are working to embed ESG [environmental, social and governance] principles into every part of our value chain.” – Jamie Khoo
This commitment aligns with global trends towards environmental stewardship and positions DayOne as a leader in Malaysia’s renewable energy sector.
Future Prospects
The collaboration between DayOne and TNB represents a significant growth opportunity for both companies. Beyond decarbonization, it is paramount in determining Malaysia’s energy strategy as a whole. More importantly, it represents the genuine collaborative spirit that will be needed to address the myriad challenges presented by the digital economy and provide for sustainability.
Jamie Khoo, one of the leaders of the Malaysian campaign, underscored the significance of this agreement on determining the future of energy in Malaysia.
“This partnership with TNB marks a bold step forward in our decarbonisation journey. It reflects the ambitious collaboration needed to power the AI-driven digital economy sustainably — and to do so at scale.” – Jamie Khoo
With this agreement, DayOne and TNB are creating a powerful model that must be followed. They seek to build long-term energy resilience and sustainability across Malaysia’s economic landscape.
