Construction Begins on Lüben Wind Farm in Germany

Energiequelle has broken ground on the Lüben Wind Farm in the district of Gifhorn, Lower Saxony, Germany. The new announcement marks a major step forward by increasing renewable energy capacity in the fast-growing state. Beyond its sustainable circulation, it provides financial returns to Wittingen community members. This year, Energiequelle has already inaugurated its second wind farm in Wittingen. As the world confronts the climate crisis, this move reflects a deepening commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

In December 2024, government regulators gave the go-ahead to the Lüben Wind Farm development. This approval followed the project’s successful winning of the February tender for onshore wind energy conducted by the German Federal Network Agency. To start, the new wind farm will be energized with five of Enercon’s E-138 turbines. Each turbine will be equipped with turbines that will reach 160m and produce an equally impressive 4.26 megawatts (MW).

The Lüben Wind Farm is expected to have an astounding capacity factor. It will produce approximately 77 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity annually. This huge amount of energy would be enough to power nearly 22,000 average households in and around Wittingen. It would significantly improve the region’s energy independence and sustainability goals.

Beyond its renewable energy benefits, the Lüben Wind Farm project has other financial incentives for local residents that go beyond the standard practices. Every household in Lüben will be able to receive an annual electricity bonus of €200, encouraging broad community support and participation. In addition, Energiequelle has agreed with the town of Wittingen to pay it a dividend of €0.002 per consumed kilowatt-hour that comes from the Wittingen wind farm. This payment is estimated to generate some €154,000 annually, returning much-needed financial resources to pursue local initiatives.

Energiequelle expects to commission the Lüben Wind Farm in the second and third quarters of 2027. This project is an important step forward in Germany’s efforts to transition to a cleaner, renewable energy future. This project fits into bigger national goals to expand renewable energy capacity and move away from fossil fuels.
