California Reaches New Heights in Clean Energy Production

California has achieved extraordinary milestones in its pursuit of an equitable clean energy future. In reality, nearly every day of 2023, the state has produced 100% of its electricity from clean energy sources during at least some portion of the day. This incredible achievement is a testament to California’s dedication to expanding renewable energy and its role as a leader in the worldwide clean energy transition.

In 2024, California added a staggering 7,000 megawatts (MW) of clean capacity, marking the largest single-year increase recorded in the state’s history. Renewables like solar and wind generated 43% of the Golden State’s power mix in 2023. Further, big hydroelectricity and nuclear helped each with 12%, highlighting the variety of resources in the Golden State’s energy mix that powers California’s grid.

Growth in Renewable Energy Capacity

Since 2019, California has brought on a staggering 25,000 MW of new energy capacity. A significant portion of this growth can be attributed to advancements in solar energy and battery storage technology. This is a stunning 61% jump from last year’s totals. Solar technology continues to drive the state’s renewable energy capacity. By late May 2025, generation from the fleet hit an incredible high mark, breaking 21,500 MW of output.

As California grows its energy infrastructure to keep the lights on, the state is increasing its battery storage capabilities, now over 15 GW. This rapid expansion increases the overall reliability of the electric grid. It helps integrate more intermittent renewable power onto the grid, like solar and wind energy.

“California has achieved yet another major milestone on our journey to a clean energy future. The latest numbers show how our state is demonstrating that clean energy is mainstream and is here to stay.” – David Hochschild

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The clean energy transition has been as good for California’s economy as it’s been for the environment. Since 2000, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by over 20%, even as the state’s economic output has grown by almost 78%. For that reason, California is the undeniable national leader in clean energy jobs, with the most rapid growth on record. The state is home to more than 550,000 jobs in this field.

Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted these achievements, stating, “California is making our clean energy future a reality. The world’s fourth-largest economy is running on two-thirds clean power – the largest economy on the planet to achieve this milestone.”

A Sustainable Future

California’s progress in clean energy showcases the state’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Transitioning to renewable sources directly spurs local economies. It creates an ambitious model for other states and nations that are working to solve the problems being caused by climate change.

California is leading the way on ambitious clean energy innovation. Without any doubt, its position as the global clean energy leader isn’t just strong, but steadfast. The state’s commitment to achieving higher renewable energy targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions positions it as a model for sustainable development.
