Bruce Power and Candu Energy Renew Partnership to Support Nuclear Infrastructure

Bruce Power and Candu Energy have jointly proclaimed the renewal of their Master Services Agreement (MSA) for the next five years. This new strategic partnership will increase the operational performance of the soon-to-be-built Tiverton nuclear station in Ontario, Canada. This renewed agreement comes as part of Bruce Power’s ongoing multi-year life extension project, which stands as one of Canada’s most significant electricity infrastructure initiatives.

The renewed MSA, first reached in 2015, was scheduled to run out at the end of 2025. The agreement has been the foundation for the realization of Bruce Power’s major component replacement (MCR) program and the success of refurbish activities. The partnership underscores a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and collaboration, focusing on the eight CANDU reactors at Bruce Power’s site, which contribute significantly to Ontario’s Integrated Energy Plan.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Bruce Power’s life extension project is the largest private sector investment in Canada’s nuclear industry and Canada’s entire generation infrastructure. Besides creating significant economic and jobs growth throughout Ontario and all of Canada, the renewed MSA promises many other benefits. Bruce Power supplies approximately 30% of Ontario’s electricity, making this partnership vital for the province’s energy landscape.

Eric Chassard, president and CEO of Bruce Power, emphasized the importance of this collaboration:

“This agreement strengthens our operational and project capabilities but also supports thousands of high-skilled jobs and drives economic growth in Ontario and across Canada.”

This deal between Bruce Power and Candu Energy guarantees a long-term commitment. Together, they’re going to keep the six CANDU reactors at the Bruce Power station running until 2064. This commitment significantly strengthens our energy security. It’s part of that big-picture goal of spreading clean power across our region, too.

Strengthening Nuclear Energy Infrastructure

The neighbouring Tiverton nuclear station, home to operator Bruce Power, is known as one of the largest nuclear plants in the world. The renewed agreement provides a host of Candu Energy capabilities for future work packages. It is vital to the efficient and safe operation of the plant.

Chassard further noted the critical role this partnership plays in Ontario’s energy future:

“Our continued long-term support for their CANDU-powered station is critical to Ontario’s energy security and clean power goals. We look forward to many more years of collaboration together, building on the success of the prior MSA.”

AtkinsRéalis, the parent company of Candu Energy, have been complicit in Bruce Power’s life extension program for more than a decade. This continued joint effort underscores how both industries benefit from having a strong nuclear base capable of helping meet increasing global energy needs.

A Collaborative Future

Both organizations are excitedly pursuing what lies ahead. With a strong foundation—the renewed MSA—this growth and innovation will continue to transform our nuclear sector for decades to come. Part of the goal of the collaboration is to not only enhance operational efficiencies, but keep those skilled jobs from moving out of the local economy.

Bruce Power and Candu Energy have extended their collaboration agreement. They’re all doing their part to help Ontario’s energy security and ignite economic growth.
