Axpo Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio with Solar Plants Acquisition in Greece

Swiss-based international energy company Axpo has recently announced its agreement to acquire electricity generated from two newly established solar power plants in Greece. The production plants located in the Viotia prefecture are named Skala Korinis and Loutsa. Combined, they have a whopping installed capacity of 102 megawatts (MW). This acquisition marks the next step of Axpo’s strong commitment to expanding its renewable energy offering further in central and southeastern Europe.

The agreement was formally announced on April 29, 2025. Power produced at the Skala Korinis and Loutsa facilities will be purchased entirely by Axpo. To put that in perspective, both of these facilities were constructed in 2023. By locking in this renewable energy supply, Axpo aims to boost its competitive edge on the regional energy market. Simultaneously, it takes a proactive approach helping countries accelerate their clean energy transitions.

Vasilis Machias, managing director of Axpo Greece, commented on the significance of this agreement, stating, “This agreement reinforces Axpo’s ability to provide innovative and tailored renewable energy solutions across central and southeastern Europe.”

As it stands today, Axpo already manages a very healthy renewable energy portfolio of 93 terawatt hours. To do this, the company draws on its extensive knowledge of the local market. This, together with the strengths of its wider family, leads to successful management of Greece’s electricity sector and operation. This proximity and local expertise bolsters Axpo’s unique position as a holistic energy supplier able to deliver tailored regional solutions in response to local market needs.

Axpo Nordic, a daughter company of Axpo Group, has taken an interesting long-term step. Recently, they signed a 10-year PPA with Exilion Tuuli Ky, a Finnish renewable energy investor and producer. This partnership is the latest example of Axpo’s strategy of optimizing its portfolio in other European markets.

The two solar plants, Skala Korinis and Loutsa, are owned by EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of French national utility EDF. Antonis Xenios, representative from EDF Renewables, welcomed the new partnership with Axpo and added that “EDF Renewables is excited to… He stated, “We are thrilled about our partnership with Axpo and the opportunities it presents. This collaboration reinforces EDF Renewables’ dedication to maximise the potential of renewable energy and accelerate the energy transition, contributing to the decarbonisation of the Greek economy.”

Axpo makes its renewable energy offerings even greener by acquiring output through offtake contracts from new solar facilities. The move is crucial in helping Europe satisfy its rapidly increasing demand for clean, reliable energy. The company’s business practices demonstrate its long-running commitment to promoting the worldwide transition to sustainable energy use.
